Found in Seaham yesterday in one of the caves at the foot of the cliffs
🌊
We tried to remove it, but it was wedged in so tightly (along with loads of other plastic). Loads of rubbish on the beach, mostly decomposed or shredded by the ocean, but the vast majority of people were just bent over looking for seaglass
🤦‍♀️

This bugs me slightly....
Don’t get me wrong - we love a good beach-comb, but rather than just taking from the beach for your own purpose, wouldn’t it be better to do some litter picking before collecting your treasures? Leave the place better than you found it? The ocean will thank you
🐟🐋

I think this should be standard beach etiquette, if you’re taking pretty shells, driftwood, nice pebbles, seaglass etc (especially if this will then be made into something crafty and then sold at a profit), do something good for the ocean/beach/marine life first

🐋
Don’t just be a taker. And definitely don’t be a tosser - that’s you, whoever threw that Pepsi bottle into the ocean/on the beach... you’re a massive 🤬‼️❌🚯

🍂 Autumn Sunrises 🍂
Our favourite time of year has arrived. Not only because Molly gets a break from her litter picking duties (as the beaches are so much cleaner), but it is just BEAUTIFUL in Scarborough 🍂
From 30th September doggies are allowed on the entire beach at both bays - so we spend a lot of time here. The cooler temperature means people spend less time sat on the sand, so there’s less “tourist” litter to pick up 🙌🐋🐟
Of course the storms and rough tides brings in a whole heap of different kinds of litter tangled up in the seaweed. More about that in our next post. But for now, here’s our lovely Molly enjoying an Autumnal sunrise ❤️🐶🐾

Ahhh beautiful Scarborough - why do you attract so many prats? 🤦‍♀️
So this week’s annoying litter find was a buried crabbing bucket in the sand ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️
After spending a good 20 minutes digging it out by hand (didn’t want molly to cut her paws on the sharp broken plastic), an entire bucket was removed from the sand (swipe to see pics) ➡️➡️➡️
The (slightly) annoying part of it is the whole time a local B&B owner just stood chatting away, as I’m breaking a sweat on my hands and knees trying to beat the incoming tide. The bucket was removed in the nick of time... a small victory 🏆💪
When will the message get through? Plastic left on/in/under the sand goes in the sea and kills what little marine life we have left. DON’T BE A PRAT!! 🐟🐬🐠🐳🐙🦐🦞🦑🦀🐡🐋🦈🐙🦑🦐🦞🦀🐡🐠🐟🐬🐳🐋🦈🦞🐟🦑🐡🐙🐠🦐🐬🦀🐳🦈🐋

There is no such thing as cheap...

I'm sorry but your getting ripped off.

We've conservatively estimated what people paid for the 463 snapped body boards we collected at Croyde bay in 59 days.

60% being the cheapies and 40% of these being the so-called 'better quality' £20 mid range. Every single one broken.

The pile here cost £5,785.

Cheap.... in reality is expensive - for people and planet.

And so it begins...
Give people a disposable/single use product, and some people will dispose of it ON THE FLOOR!!
Buying single use anything is a waste, there are lots of reusable, plastic-free masks available. That way if you’re going to be selfish enough to throw it on the floor when finished, it won’t break down into a million pieces and harm wildlife (although we’ve seen seagulls tangled in reusable masks too!).
Luckily we always have lots of spare doggy bags to safely pick up discarded PPE. But we shouldn’t have to 😔

We’re amazed at the amount of footwear Molly pulls out of the sea. And sadly it’s all plastic.... we all know what happens to plastic in the sea 😖🚯🐳🐟🌊
If you notice anyone hopping about with one pink shoe, tell them we have the other 😂

REPOST

♻️ Beach Toy Recycling Scheme ♻️
To all our beach cleaning friends - please save any discarded beach toys you find on cleans. We’re helping Precious Plastic Lancaster with their latest project recycling PP plastics into new products
The shop will be the first collection point, so you can drop any toys off during opening hours (we’re working on finding more collection points on the beach front)
This will replace our “Borrow a Bucket” scheme for the time being, we’ve had to put this on hold due to Covid-19. We hope to bring it back in the future, but in the meantime we’ve found another way to recycle the thousands of beach toys left on the sand every season
Here’s how to get involved:
♻️ Save the buckets, spades and solid plastic beach toys from your cleans and litter picks (don’t worry if they’re cracked or broken)
♻️ Give them a rinse to remove any sand, and/or a quick scrub if they’re dirty (don’t worry if this isn’t possible, we’ll give them a clean before packaging up to send off, but it’ll save us lots of time if you can help with this step)
♻️ Drop them off at the shop on Eastborough, Scarborough Old Town (or contact us to arrange a collection once you have about a bin bag’s worth of toys)
We will then:
♻️ Clean, separate by colour and break down into smaller pieces (so we can pack as much as possible into the shipping box)
♻️ Send to Precious Plastic Lancaster (using a carbon neutral courier, in recycled shipping boxes from the shop)
Precious Plastics will then:
♻️ Shred, melt and use an injection mould to create new products. Firstly they’re working on hair combs, but the possibilities are endless 🙌
Here’s a video of a similar system being used elsewhere:

We’re literally SO EXCITED about this project and hope you’ll support us by reposting and tagging anyone who may be interested in getting involved

Celebrating in with a socially distanced beach clean 🙌🚯🌊♻️
We joined the guys and collected loads of cig butts, tiny bits of polystyrene and plastics already starting to break down. The beach was surprisingly litter free for a Monday (although the bad weather deterred many visitors this weekend). Despite the miserable forecast, the sun came out, it’s been a beautiful afternoon.
Molly scrambled under one of the kiosks to find a ball, tried (and failed) to dig out a ship’s porthole that has washed into shore, and photobombed our pics... she had a good day too 🐾💚
