Our Story

Salters only use the most wholesome, pure and natural ingredients, with no artificial preservatives, colours or flavours in its pet food range. We believe ours is the only veterinary formulated dog food to contain extra virgin olive oil. The chicken and rice we use is normally destined for our own plates. Every single natural ingredient is carefully selected by hand to ensure we select the best quality ingredients. When Salters launched their dog food in 1999, they had investigated the dog food market and decided to do something different, that difference was to make sure every ingredient was of the highest quality. As Stephen Salter explained, “I'd lived in Spain for a number of years so was well aware of the nutritional value of extra virgin olive oil. I decided that this should be one of the basic ingredients. No other dog food you can buy uses it. I wanted all the other ingredients to be of the same high quality, so everything that goes into Salter’s food is fit for human consumption. I wanted to feed my dogs a good wholesome pure food, and so Salters dog food was created. I have no hesitation in eating the food myself and most owners who use Salters are so confident of the quality of the food they will try it themselves, how many dog foods would you be willing to do that with? ”. Stephen Salter is a butcher by trade as was his father and grandfather, his great grandfather was a fisherman who regularly fished for cod in the North Sea, following in the family tradition has given Stephen a deep knowledge and understanding of what quality meats and foods are, so when it came to creating a premium dog food it was determined that quality of ingredients would always the best. With help from veterinary advisors Stephen has worked hard to produce a quality dog food, which has been trialled by vets and himself working closely with dog owners of various breeds and types of dog. The message is simple, a balanced diet of quality ingredients combined with regular exercise is the very best we can do for our human and canine family.
