The lettuces sown from our seed saving seed collection have now been potted on into larger modules and thinned to a single plant per cell.

If you'd like to learn about seed saving this year there's still plenty of time to pick up one of our seed packs and sow along with us though - each pack contains four species of seed to demonstrate different seed saving techniques, pollination bags, marking twine, bags, labels and full instructions - available from our website: thegardengate.uk/shop

The lettuce variety is May Queen, which we've chosen both for flavour and because its a fast grower that sets seed reliably. In a few weeks we'll plant these out into the polytunnel, making sure for our seed crop to only plant those that are true to type - already we can see some of the red pigmentation that is characteristic of this variety

One of our main goals this year is to continue reducing the amount of seed and potting compost we're buying in, both for financial and environmental reasons, so I've been digging into our library for pre-1950s instructions on making potting mixes. Would you believe it didn't always come in plastic sacks...

This paragraph from Sutton's superbly terse The Culture of Vegetables and Flowers (1904) caught my eye - we shall be doing as we're told, taking time by the forelock and starting to prepare our seed sowing mixes this week.

I'm reassured to read that 'forethought of this kind is certain of an ample reward', so we'll see how we get on this Friday in Part 2 of our free series following our preparations for spring 😀🌱🌱

Spring. It may feel a long way off in the January rain, mud, frost and ice, but as the days get longer a new growing season is on the horizon.

Now is the time to get back in that potting shed and start preparing for a productive plot!

So join us over 4 weeks as we get our vegetable garden ready for spring. Each week we'll take a look at a job we are doing and a crop we are sowing right now to get ready for the new growing season.

Dust off those seed trays and join us in Getting Ready for Spring!
