Emerald Tree Boa Import

Quarantine Progress Update

All animals have now settled into their quarantine enclosures. Each setup includes a sterile tub fitted with plastic dowels for perching and a suspended water bowl, held in my custom acrylic brackets positioned just below perch level to make drinking easy and accessible. I’m currently using bottled water to maintain clean, consistent hydration.

As is typical with most imports, snake mites were present on arrival. I addressed the issue immediately using my preferred protocol with Oremec (ivermectin-based). The snakes now appear mite-free, though I will continue treatment for a full four weeks to ensure any newly hatched mites are eliminated.

Next week, I’ll be adding live plants to the enclosures to create a more natural environment and promote a sense of security during acclimation.

Emerald tree boas tend to do everything slowly, and hydration is no exception. To support proper rehydration, I’m employing several methods. Suspended water bowls are positioned just below their perches, encouraging natural drinking behavior. I’m also using a MistKing system to lightly mist the animals, something they seem to respond well to. For individuals that appear especially dehydrated, I’ve introduced a fogger to increase ambient humidity and encourage fluid intake.

These hydration protocols will remain in place until their urates soften, indicating that hydration levels are where they need to be. Once they pass the urate test, I’ll begin feeding trials.

The Power of Social Media

Every once in a while, social media ends up connecting you with someone in a really unexpected way. That’s what happened when Ethan Parrott reached out to me about his recent trip to the Iron Range in Australia, and honestly, I was blown away by what he found.

Not only did he come across multiple green tree pythons, but he actually spotted them during the day, coiled up on branches. That alone is impressive. But what really took it to the next level was that he measured the temperatures and even checked the UVI levels the snakes were receiving through the dappled sunlight.

What’s even more interesting is that the group of green tree pythons he found looks a lot like the Merauke locality, even though they’re separated by an ocean. It’s wild to think they may have once been connected. Evolution is pretty incredible like that.

Back to Ethan’s findings, when I went to Indonesia to try and find green tree pythons, I searched high and low during the day and didn’t see a single one. So hearing that Ethan not only found multiple animals but found them in the daylight really impressed me.

Most people know I’m all about trying to understand what makes these animals tick, things like natural light cycles and UV exposure in their native environments. Whether it’s a leaf-tailed gecko, a chameleon, or a green tree python, I’m always chasing after that kind of data. So the fact that Ethan was able to get close enough to take UVI readings near these snakes during the day? That kind of info is absolute gold.

It just goes to show that dedicated keepers and hobbyists in the private sector are doing some seriously meaningful work for the animals we love. Way to go Ethan!

Can you spot her? In this photo is a female Madagascan leaf-nosed snake (Langaha madagascariensis), easily one of the most unique reptiles on the planet. These incredible snakes have a natural talent for camouflage, often swaying on branches to mimic the movement of twigs in the wind and avoid predators.

Primarily lizard feeders, they’re perfectly adapted for life in the trees, where their unusual appearance helps them stay hidden. Not much is known about this species, especially in the wild, which makes observing their behavior in captivity all the more fascinating.

This female seems to be thriving in my care. I keep her relatively cool in a well-planted enclosure, with naturalistic lighting that really shows off her amazing beauty.

Emerald Tree Boa Import Update

I’m excited to share that the emerald tree boas have finally arrived this week. I’ve been focused on getting them properly acclimated and settled into a strict quarantine protocol.

For those wondering, I don’t import animals for general public sales. While I may occasionally work with select breeders, the primary purpose of these imports is to establish new, genetically diverse bloodlines for my own breeding projects.

As many of you know, this species can be particularly challenging to establish in captivity. If you’re interested in following their progress, feel free to drop a comment below, I’ll be sharing updates along the way.

Another beautiful clutch of green tree pythons is about to hatch, adding to an already exciting season. With two additional clutches currently incubating and two more females showing signs they may soon lay, I’ve made the decision to separate all remaining males from their potential mates. This allows me to focus fully on raising the growing number of hatchlings this season.

As any experienced reptile breeder knows, sometimes less is more. Prioritizing quality over quantity is key, and with that in mind, the future looks very promising for pure locality green tree pythons here in the UK

A fresh clutch of Rankin’s dragons is starting to hatch, with some just emerging and others already making their way into the world. It’s always a special process for me. It starts with caring for the adults all year, making sure they’re healthy and ready for breeding. Then, I gently dig up the eggs and place them in the incubator.

About two months later, these tiny dragons hatch, perfect little replicas of their parents. No matter how many times I see it, it never gets old. I truly love what I do, and I’m grateful every day that my hobby has become my career.

What a week! Sorry for the lack of content, things have been pretty hectic with eggs hatching and new babies arriving. One of the highlights was definitely seeing one of my Super Stripe Merauke green tree pythons lay a beautiful, fertile clutch. I’m really enjoying the breeding season so far, and it looks like there might be another exciting one on the way!

Tip of the Day:

Successfully establishing baby green tree pythons can be a complex and time consuming process.
Breeders around the world dedicate countless hours to encouraging these hatchlings to accept defrosted prey, ensuring that by the time they’re sold, the snakes are feeding reliably and ready for a smooth transition to their new homes.

One method I’ve used for many years is syringe feeding. This technique provides the necessary calories to support healthy development and gives the breeder additional time to help the snake begin feeding voluntarily. It’s also a low stress approach, as it’s non-invasive and generally well tolerated by hatchlings, minimizing unnecessary stress during this critical stage.

Green tree pythons, deep in the jungles of Sorong, Indonesia. I set out to learn everything I could about how these animals live in the wild. When it wasn’t from firsthand observation, I spoke with the people who live alongside them, the ones who catch and work with these beautiful reptiles every day.

One thing that stood out: most hatchlings were found on trees with a distinctive vine system running down them. Which raises an interesting question, do females select nesting sites around these trees to give their offspring the best possible start in life?
