This weekend the temperatures are set to rise again! 🔥

We would recommend not walking your dog during the day, particularly midday as this is where the temperature is at its highest! Walk your dog in the early morning or evening.

One missed walk will not cause any issues to your pet however one walk during this hot weather can!

Breeds such as bulldogs, frenchies and pugs are more predisposed to heat stroke due to their anatomy so extra care should be taken!

Six tell tale signs your dog is experiencing heatstroke-

🐾 Heavy breathing/ continuous panting even when exercise has stopped
🐾 Difficulty breathing and increased respiratory effort.
🐾 Bright pink/red gums and lips
🐾 Lethargic- unwilling to get up, drowsy
🐾 Drooling
🐾 Vomiting and or diarrhoea
🐾 Collapse
🐾 Seizures

If your dog starts to experience any of these signs please contact the practice immediately. It could save their life.

🍫World Chocolate Day 🍫

Today is world chocolate day and as tasty as it is for us humans, chocolate poses severe health risks to our furry friends.

Chocolate contains a substance called Theobromine which is perfectly safe for humans but toxic to dogs, cats and rabbits as they are unable to digest it properly.

Theobromine is a very similar substance to caffeine and can send our pets nervous system into overdrive and cause symptoms such as-

🍫 Excitement, restlessness and hyperactivity
🍫 Abdominal pain
🍫 Vomiting and or diarrhoea
🍫 Drinking and weeing more than usual also known as polyuria/polydypsia

Symptoms of chocolate toxicity usually appear within 2 to 4 hours however some cases can take up to 12. In severe toxicity cases, symptoms may include-

🍫 Fast breathing or panting
🍫 Shaking, trembling or tremors
🍫 High temperature
🍫 Seizures
🍫 Fast heart rate

If left untreated, chocolate toxicity can lead to heart failure and can be fatal. If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate please contact your practice immediately, try to keep any packaging where possible and try to advise us how much chocolate was ingested.

It’s not worth the risk, keep all chocolate products out of reach of your pets. It could save their life 🐾

🐰Rabbit Awareness Week 2025 🐰

The focus for Rabbit Awareness Week this week is “Happy Hoppy Homes” and spreading awareness on the importance of suitable environments for pet bunnies.

Throughout the week, our nurse Jade will be sharing lots of information about keeping rabbits as pets and ensuring they have a happy life.

Todays topic is: Diet

🐇 Choosing the best rabbit food for your bunnies can seem confusing. They are complex animals that need a balanced diet with the right mix of fibre, vitamins and minerals to stay happy and healthy.

🐇 They are herbivores, this means rabbits need a plant-based diet with lots of fibre. Fibre is a key part of their diet and it keeps your rabbits’ digestive system healthy and moving, helping to prevent illnesses such as gut stasis. An easy way to get lots of great fibre in their diet is to make sure your rabbits have unlimited access to good quality, dust extracted feeding hay or fresh grass.

🐇 It’s a good idea to always monitor your rabbit’s weight by weighing them regularly. This helps you to keep an eye on their overall health too. If you have any concerns about your rabbit’s weight, or if your rabbit is not eating, seek the advice of your vet.

🐇 Muesli has been found to cause rabbits to selectively feed. This is when rabbits eat some of the high sugar elements and leave behind the high fibre parts. This leads to rabbits eating an unbalanced diet which can result in poor health, including dental disease and obesity.

Following the Excel Feeding Plan and feeding rabbit nuggets rather than muesli can help ensure your rabbits are getting the best diet and prevents selective feeding.

Your rabbits’ diet should be 85-90% high quality feeding hay or fresh grass, supplemented with nuggets and fresh greens, as well as fresh water and the occasional treat.
