Breeding for Temperament – Why It Matters 💛
Whether you're breeding, choosing a stallion, or buying your next horse, temperament should never be overlooked.
At H.C Show Production, we truly believe that a great mind makes all the difference — in the ring, at home, and everywhere in between. We work with horses from all backgrounds, but it’s those with kind, willing, trainable temperaments that really shine and bring joy to work with every day.
This post is a must-read if you're thinking long-term — because a good brain is just as important as good movement or conformation.
👉 We’d love to hear your thoughts — what do you look for first when viewing a horse?
𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧✨️ Because a beautiful horse with a bad attitude is just... difficult. 😅
When we talk about breeding better Arabians, we often focus on conformation or beauty — but what about what’s going on between those cute ears?

🔹 Arabians are known for their intelligence, sensitivity, and loyalty — but not all temperaments are equal. Some bloodlines are sweet and willing, others can be hot or reactive. And YES — temperament is heritable.

Both the mare and the stallion must have good temperaments. Calm under pressure. Willing. Trusting. If either parent is unpredictable or aggressive — stop there.
🔸 𝟐. 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞
Good breeding starts with what you SEE and FEEL:
– Does the horse stand quietly for the farrier?
– Does it spook often?
– Is it kind to humans and other horses?
– Does it handle change or noise calmly?
🔸 𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦
That stallion might win ribbons, but if he's hard to manage or passes on a hot brain — you're creating more problems than prizes. Breed the kind of horses that kids can groom, beginners can ride, and that you want to be around.
🔸 𝟒. 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫
“He’s just stallion-ish.” “She’s moody.” “He’s too smart.” 👀
Nope. A horse that bites, bolts, kicks, or can’t focus should NOT be part of a breeding program. Don’t breed difficult into the next generation.

If a mare is alert but nervous, pair her with a calm, steady stallion. Let their foal inherit the best from both. 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭!
An Arabian with a good mind is worth their weight in gold. Kind. Smart. Safe. Easy to train. It’s not just about looks – it’s about what they’re like to live with.
