During this heatwave, here’s what dog owners should know:

- Avoid walking your dog during peak heat, walk your dogs early morning or during the evening.

- Pavements can burn your dogs paws, hold your palm on the pavement for 5 seconds if it’s too hot for you it’s too hot for your dog.

- Never leave your dogs in the car, even with the windows open. Your dog can overheat and suffer fatal heatstroke quickly.

- Signs of heatstroke: drooling, excessive panting, wobbling, vomiting, diarrhoea & bright red gums.

- If your dog is suffering from heatstroke bring them to a veterinarian immediately.

- Provide constant fresh, cold water (even add some ice cubes).

- You can use cooling mats, damp towels, paddling pools and frozen treats.

- Regular brushing removes excess undercoat which prevents matting, matting traps heat making the weather 10x hotter for your dog.

- Matting restricts airflow to the skin making your dog more prone to overheating.

To cool your dog if they overheat:
- Move them to shade straight away.
- Pour cool water over them. (make sure it is not freezing cold)
- Offer small amounts of water
- Use fans
- Contact your vet immediately.
