We caught up with some of our team to see what vet nursing really means to them…..

Veterinary nurses carry out regular checks on patients including their temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate. Nurses also listen to the heart, noting any abnormal rhythms or chest sounds and check patients gums colour. Any changes in these parameters are reported to the vet so the treatment plan can be changed as required

Rutland House is lucky to have some nurses who have had further training in the care of injured and sick wildlife - this spans a variety of species, from blue t**s and mice to hedgehogs and owls! We are also lucky to have a good relationship with a fantastic wildlife hospital who collect wildlife from us to continue their journey back to the wild πŸ¦”
X for πŸ†‡-πŸ†πŸ…°πŸ†ˆπŸ†‚
Veterinary nurses undergo training to understand how X-rays work, how to process them and also how to evaluate the image. Nurses also have to learn how to position the patient for many different views! 🦴

Because vet nurses just can’t say no! We will always strive to provide our best care to every patient, maintain hygienic practices, continue to keep our knowledge up to date and also care for our lovely clients πŸ’œ

When a patient is suspected to have a β€˜zoonotic disease’ this means that as their nurses, we are at risk of contracting it too. Such diseases include leptospirosis, ringworm, giardia and toxoplasmosis. Any suspicion of a patient carrying a zoonotic disease requires the nurses and vets to wear full PPE whilst treating them to reduce our risk of contracting this disease 🦠

Student veterinary nurses can study to gain their qualification in a number of ways - by gaining an apprentice placement in practice and learning as you work with day or block release for college, or by a university based course. Either way produces highly skilled, knowledgeable and adaptable nurses who can provide top standard care to the patients that they are responsible for 🩺
R for πŸ†πŸ…΄πŸ†‚πŸ†„πŸ†‚πŸ…²πŸ…ΈπŸ†ƒπŸ…°πŸ†ƒπŸ…ΈπŸ…ΎπŸ…½
Vet nurses are often the first on the scene in an emergency situation, whether it is a cardiac arrest during surgery or a collapsed patient who comes into the practice. They work alongside the vets running a resuscitation, administering medications and carrying out CPR as directed. A resuscitation event is always emotionally and physically draining for everyone involved β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή
S for πŸ†‚πŸ†„πŸ†πŸ…ΆπŸ…ΈπŸ…²πŸ…°πŸ…» πŸ…ΏπŸ†πŸ…΄πŸ…Ώ
The nurses are predominantly responsible for surgically prepping the patient prior to surgery. Dilution rates are dependent on what surgical scrub is being used and the scrubbing methods also vary, depending on surgery type, surgical area and college tutoring 🧽
T for πŸ†ƒπŸ…΄πŸ…°πŸ…²πŸ…·πŸ…ΈπŸ…½πŸ…Ά
Veterinary nurses can become clinical supervisors for new student veterinary nurses, helping them to complete their practical nursing file and carrying out tutorials. Nurses can also be involved in mentoring auxiliary care assistants teaching them how to carry out lab tests, in-patient care and reception duties πŸ“š
U for πŸ†„πŸ…»πŸ†ƒπŸ†πŸ…°πŸ†‚πŸ…ΎπŸ†„πŸ…½πŸ…³
With the right training and support, veterinary nurses play a crucial role in ultrasound and are able to perform POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound) scans. Whilst nurses cannot diagnose any conditions, they can aid the vet in prioritising patients depending on what can be seen on a POCUS. Rutland House have a number of nurses who can perform quick scans to assess level of free fluid in the chest or abdomen
