🐑 Celebrating National SQP Week 🐄

This week we’re proud to recognise the important role that SQPs (Suitably Qualified Persons) play in supporting animal health, welfare and responsible medicine use.

At Dyfed Farm Vets Carmarthen, we’re fortunate to have Mandy, our qualified SQP, whose knowledge, dedication and advice are invaluable to our customers and their livestock.

We’re also have Ami, another qualified SQP, who is currently enjoying maternity leave with her growing family.

And a special mention goes to Sophie, who is currently training to become an SQP. We wish her every success as she continues her studies and gains experience in this important role.

Thank you to all SQPs across the UK for the work you do every day to support farmers, animal owners and the wider industry.

Helen is also one of only 18 RCVS Advanced Practitioners in Cattle Health and Production, and the only one listed in Wales!!!

🎉 Meet Ben – our newest teammate at Dyfed Farm Vets! 🐄🌱

Ben graduated from the University of Nottingham in June 2025 and it’s safe to say farm life has always been in his blood 💚 — he’s been working on farms since his teenage years and even trained with our team while studying.

After graduating, Ben headed off on an American adventure, where he explored intensive farming systems… and importantly discovered just how high you can pile corn silage! 🌽😄

Now back in the UK, he’s ready to roll up his sleeves, get stuck into life on farm, and meet all our fantastic clients across South Wales 🤝

When he’s not working, Ben’s been trying his hand at coastal fishing 🎣 — so if you’ve got any tips, he’s all ears!

☀️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING ☀️

With temperatures remaining high, we’re reminding all farm clients to keep a close eye on livestock for signs of heat stress and heat stroke.

Animals can deteriorate very quickly in hot weather, particularly:
🐑 Sheep in full fleece
🐄 Cattle during transport or handling
🐐 Goats in confined or poorly ventilated areas
🐖 Pigs, which are especially vulnerable to heat
🦙 Alpacas sensitive to rising temperatures

Please ensure all stock have:
✔ Constant access to fresh, clean water
✔ Adequate shade and good airflow
✔ Reduced handling, gathering, or transport during peak heat
✔ Frequent checks throughout the day
⚠️ Early signs of heat stress should never be ignored — prompt action can save lives.

And a reminder for farmers and handlers:
💧 Stay hydrated
🧢 Take regular breaks

☀️ Avoid prolonged work during the hottest part of the day where possible

It’s the little moments that make farm life so special.
