BEWARE...
The adder (Vipera berus) is the UK's only venomous snake, featuring a distinctive dark zig-zag pattern on its back and red eyes. They are small, shy, and rarely bite unless threatened, preferring to flee or "freeze". Found in woodland, heathland, and moorland, they are most active from March to October, often seen basking.

Key Facts & Safety:
Identification: Stocky, up to 70cm long.
Males are silvery-grey, females are brownish, both with dark zig-zag markings. Black (melanistic) forms exist.
Bites: Extremely rare and seldom fatal to humans (no deaths since 1975). Bites are painful and cause inflammation; seek immediate medical attention (NHS 111 or 999).
Dogs: More at risk than humans; keep dogs under control in suspected adder areas and see a vet if bitten.
Habitat: Common on sunny slopes, coastal dunes, rocky hillsides, and railway embankments.
Protection: Protected by law in the UK; it is illegal to kill, injure, or sell them.
