The Importance of MRI in Diagnosing Pets 🐶
Our furry companions can’t tell us when something is wrong, which is why advanced imaging like MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) plays a crucial role in veterinary medicine. Rosie came to us with suspected neck pain and ataxia (incoordination within the nervous system), her signs progressed, and she became unable to walk.
Just like in human healthcare, MRI provides detailed images of soft tissues, the brain, spinal cord, joints, and internal organs—helping us to diagnose conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed.
As you will will see from Rosie’s story, the MRI played a pivotal role in diagnosing her condition leading to a prompt diagnosis and treatment that has allowed her to get back to living life to her best!
If your pet is showing unusual behaviour, weakness, seizures, or chronic pain please contact us on 01983 214747, this service is available to all Island pets, just ask your vet to refer you to Island Referrals. 🐾

🎓We recently had the pleasure of hosting yet another fantastic CPD evening at the practice. 👀Our visiting Specialist Ophthalmologist Amna Salih from Optivet shared some fascinating insights on ‘Common Ophthalmic Emergencies’👁️, while our Specialist Surgeon Ian provided an engaging talk on ‘Using Epidurals in Practice’ 🩼. It was a great turnout, with plenty of learning, discussion, and of course, delicious food! 🍕
We love being able to run these events and bring the Island veterinary community together in a space where we can all socialise and learn from one another by sharing thoughts and expertise. Keep an eye on our page for details on our next CPD event.💙💚

INTRODUCING, ARTHUR!🐶💚

Arthur was referred to Island Referrals 2 years ago when his vet found a mass in his mouth after his owner noticed that he appeared to be in pain (and was even hesitant when playing ball).

On referral, Ian performed a CT scan and biopsy. The scan helped to check for any signs of metastasis (signs that the cancer had spread), which thankfully in Arthur's case there wasn't, and the biopsy helped to categorise the nature of the mass, which came back as a 'Squamous cell Carcinoma'.

Ian then proceeded to perform a complex surgery called a 'rostral mandibulectomy' to remove the tumour, along with the front of Arthur's lower jaw, to give the best chance of a curative outcome for him. Whilst this was a big surgery with a tough recovery, Arthur handled it like a champ!

Arthurs owner recently got in touch to give us an update and shared this beautiful photo:

“It’s 2 years today since Ian successfully removed a cancerous tumour from Arthur’s jaw. It was a major op, but father is still enjoying life. This was on Facebook earlier today. He manages to pick up some ways even with much of his jaw missing and enjoys his doggy porridge food. Two years of extra time thanks to Ian and all the nursing staff that cared for him,
Thank you so much.”

We love receiving updates like this from former patients, it truly makes our day! Arthur - we wish you many more years of good health.

🚀🐶 When the patient is called Rocket, there is no other bandaging more appropriate than an Island Referrals ‘special’ Rocketship! 🚀 After breaking his wrist a couple of months ago, Rocket came in to have it fused by Ian on Monday. This procedure was performed by taking bone from his upper arm (humerus) and specialist bone plates and screws to help the joint to fuse 💚🦴🐶
