Another fantastic urban trailing session for our members today.

The hot temperatures and changing wind conditions made scent behaviour far less predictable than usual, creating plenty of challenges for both dogs and handlers. This is exactly why we train in real-world environments rather than perfect conditions. Real trailing means learning to work through whatever the day throws at you.

Every dog rose to the challenge and did an excellent job, while the handlers showed some great skills in reading their dogs, trusting what they were being shown, and allowing the dogs to work things out for themselves.

At The Rutland Tracking Association, we focus on building calm, confident and independent dog teams through practical tracking, trailing and scent detection training. No ribbons, no points, just developing real skills that help dogs do what they were born to do.

Well done everyone. Today’s session was a great example of why experience in different environments is so valuable.

Long before The Rutland Tracking Association, there was Duke.

During my service in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, my first operational search dog deployment was as a Vehicle Search Dog Handler searching for weapons and explosives in Afghanistan. Duke was one of the most lovable dogs you could ever meet, but when it came to search work, he was all business. His entire world revolved around finding target odour.

Over a six month deployment, we searched countless cars, HGVs, the occasional aircraft and even a few push bikes. It was during that tour that I discovered my passion for scent detection.

Alongside a good friend of mine, Kev, we spent countless hours training our dogs and challenging each other. We would deliberately make hides more difficult, trying to catch each other out and push the dogs to solve increasingly complex problems. Looking back, those sessions taught me some of the most valuable lessons about scent behaviour, dog handling and how to systematically break down and search a vehicle.

The dogs taught us just as much as we taught them.

Even today, many of the principles I use when teaching scent detection come from those early days working operational dogs in real world environments.

PHASE ONE: Charging the Clicker

Over the next four weeks I’m going to be posting each phase of our free online scent detection program so you can learn the foundations properly, understand the principles behind the training and even ask questions along the way.

This first phase is one of the most important parts of the entire process. Before we even think about searching for odour, we need to build clear communication and value within the marker system.

The good news? You don’t need loads of fancy equipment to get started.

For week one all you need is:
✔️ A clicker
✔️ Your dog’s daily food allowance
✔️ Your dog

That’s it.

Another great morning with The Rutland Tracking Association today. Due to the heat wave we brought the session forward and made sure all dogs worked under the canopy and in the shade to keep things safe and comfortable for everyone.

Today’s focus was helping dogs understand how to locate the start of a trail and then commit to the correct direction of travel from the decoy. It might sound simple, but these foundation skills are where confident, independent scent work starts to develop.

No pressure, just allowing dogs to work through the process and learn to trust their nose. All of the teams did a fantastic job this morning and we managed to finish before the heat really kicked in.

Early morning scent work before the sun starts turning the field into a frying pan. ☀️🐾

Once our dogs understand a particular scent, we take them out into the real world and let them do proper work. Woods, fields, urban environments, changing conditions, changing scents. This is where dogs come alive.

We believe dogs thrive when training has purpose. Real environments elevate motivation, build confidence and keep that natural drive strong. We do not want dogs endlessly repeating sterile setups where everything becomes predictable and boring.

Watching a dog switch on, solve problems and do what they were genetically designed to do never gets old.

Another great Introduction to Trailing Workshop completed yesterday at Rutland Tracking Association.

We had two new dogs taking their first steps into the world of trailing and learning how to use one of the most powerful tools they already possess… their nose. We also had a dog returning to revisit the foundations after a considerable amount of time away, which is a reminder that going back and rebuilding foundations is never a step backwards.

Strong foundations create confident dogs and capable handlers.

One of the things we focus on at RTA is understanding the process rather than simply chasing the end result. Reading your dog, understanding scent, learning handling skills and allowing the dog to work naturally.

No ribbons. No gimmicks. Just proper scent work taught in a way that progresses into real capability.

Excellent work from everyone involved yesterday. Great dogs, great handlers, perfect wether and a lot of fun along the way.

The journey starts with foundations.

Our Introduction to Trailing Workshop is a no-nonsense, one-day session designed to give you and your dog a proper start. No guessing, no copying bits off the internet, no chasing people around the woods hoping it works.

You’ll learn what trailing actually is, how scent behaves, how to handle your dog on the line, and most importantly how to start building a dog you can trust rather than second-guess.

This is suitable for complete beginners or anyone who wants to reset and do it properly from the ground up.

We’ll be working in real environments at Wakerley Woods. Rural trails, natural conditions, and structured setups that actually develop your dog, not confuse it.

This isn’t about ticking a box or “having a go.”

It’s about building foundations that hold up when the training gets harder.
