Let’s Talk About Rabbits—And Why Easter Can Be Harmful to Them
Rabbits are one of the most neglected and misunderstood pets.
Easter only makes things worse, as people often bring them home on impulse without understanding their needs.
Why Are Rabbits So Misunderstood?
❗️Misinformation is everywhere - especially from large companies with big followings.
❗️They’re too easy to get. Many pet stores will sell a rabbit with little to no education or screening.
❗️They reproduce fast. One unspayed rabbit can quickly lead to dozens, and many still don’t neuter or spay.
So What Do Rabbits Actually Need?
🐰 A spacious, predator proof area which is a minimum of 3m x 2m x 1m high for two rabbits.
🐰Neuteuring or spaying is essential for all rabbits to prevent health conditions and behavioural issues.
🐰Companionship - rabbits are social animals and must be kept in at least pairs. This must be same species companionship - as cohabiting with other species can be dangerous.
🐰 Vaccinations yearly to keep them protected.
🐰 Specialist vet care—they are exotic pets and should be registered with an exotic vet.
🐰 A proper diet—hay as the main food, with vegetables, dried forage and quality pellets.
🐰 Regular health checks—they hide illnesses well, so monitoring is essential.
🐰 Enrichment—they need to dig, chew, jump, stretch, and relax.
There’s so much more to rabbit care, but luckily, we have incredible resources like the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund helping guide responsible ownership.
