3 MUSTS WHEN FEEDING STRAW!

More and more owners of good doers are successfully feeding straw (including myself!) and with the concerns over hay supply this year, straw might just be a welcome addition to our forage barn!

Straw can be a very useful forage, to reduce total calorie intake whilst ensuring a reasonable amount of forage is fed (for mind and digestive health) to horses with low energy requirements.

It can extend eating time and it helps horses and ponies to feel full.

To make feeding straw safe:
1. Introduce and increase the amount very gradually
2. Ensure their dental health is good and they can chew efficiently
3. Ensure a clean fresh, palatable free supply of water is available

You can also monitor the horse's droppings.

Choose the cleanest i.e. not dusty or musty, bright orange/yellow coloured rather than a specific type, and check it was not sprayed before harvest. Wheat, barley or oat are all acceptable to feed, providing they are of a good hygienic quality.

If you can't find suitable 'long' straw, you can use bagged, chopped straw or an equivalent chop ('chaff') product. TopChop Zero and Honeychop are options, or you might be able to find bagged long or chopped straw at your local feed merchant.

Feed up to a third of the total forage intake.

We have an unexpected Assisted DIY vacancy for 1 kind mare (under 16hh) & 1 kind gelding at our small friendly yard in Rushford.
-horses share fields with same s*x herds
-Natural tree’s & hedges
- Our horses live out all year
-large Stable for emergencies
-All weather 20x40 arena
-Kitchen, rug and tack room
-Amazing off road hacking on Euston Estate via a permit
- Weekly & monthly clinics
-On site Equine Sports Massage, PEMF Magnawave Therapy & groundwork training.
We provide Mon -Fri mornings:
- feed, Check, rug, poopicking, hay, field check
-You check your horse each evening and do all the horse duties at weekends.
-We are looking for owners who know one end of a horse to the other! And who ride their horse and would like to join us for hacks through the countryside.

-One friendly Mare under 16hh
-Our horses live out all year round in small herds. Hay, water and natural shelter is available 24/7.
-Each horse has a very large stable available for emergencies or it can be used for additional storage.
