Loud or unexpected noises like fireworks can be frightening for many dogs. For an owner, seeing your best friend distressed can be upsetting. But don’t worry, there are several ways you can help your dog through it.

What to do during fireworks:

• Block out flashes and bangs. Close any windows or curtains and turn the lights on.

• Put on music or the TV to help disguise the noise. Try Classic FM radio or look for a dog soothing playlist – gentle piano tracks that help mask fireworks and soothe anxiety.

• If your dog wants to hide, let them stay where they feel safe. Try creating a safe place or a den where they can feel comfortable.

• If they seek reassurance, calmly give them attention and comfort. Try not to over fuss them as soon as the fireworks start. Research shows that ignoring them won’t help.

• Try to stay calm and relaxed yourself. Your dog will pick up on how you’re feeling, so do your best to relax.

• Don’t tell your dog off. If your dog makes a mess or does something you don’t want because of their fear, avoid telling them off. This might make them feel more scared.

• Make sure their water bowl is full and you feed them earlier in the evening. Also walk them earlier to avoid being out at the time of the fireworks.

• Keep your dog on a lead just incase, dogs can get frightened and run away. Also check that all their details and microchip numbers are up to date to be safe.

Talk to your vet
If your dog shows signs of fear of fireworks or loud noises, make an appointment with your vet as soon as possible to seek advice.

⚠️IF IT HITS 24, WALK NO MORE ⚠️

With the weather hitting very high temperatures this week, it’s a responsible idea to familiarise yourself with what temperatures are safe for your dog☀️🐶

As a general rule of thumb, temperatures exceeding 24 degrees should attempt to be avoided for all dog walks. But some larger breeds, flat faced, obese or puppies could struggle in heat over 16 degrees. You should also take a moment to consider if your dog struggles with any emotional behaviour difficulties as studies have suggested that an increase in temperature can lead to a lower threshold for aggression.

Every year our vets treat hundreds of heat stroke cases and heartbreakingly, some end in tragedy. Many are unfortunately a result of owners not knowing the dangers of exercising their dogs in temperatures to hot for them to handle.

Heat-related illnesses are almost always preventable. DONT TAKE THE RISK and make sure your pet isn’t overheating in the sun ☀️ Walk your dog earlier or later in the day when the temperatures are cooler.

If you think your dog may be suffering from heat stroke, contact your vet immediately or, if out-of-hours, find your nearest emergency vet.

We all take caution in extreme hot weather but do we do the same when it’s below freezing? This chart from Petplan is really useful to have 🐶🐾🧊🧊
