We will be taking appropriate action this week with early walks for some and pop ins for others 🐾
Dog owners across England and Wales are being urged to immediately halt their daily routines and enforce a strict temporary lockdown for their pets as outdoor temperatures are predicted to reach a dangerous 34C.🥵🥵
"We need to take extra precautions regardless of an official weather warning, which is why we're still recommending a temporary 'dog lockdown' during this next bout of very hot weather- it's the only way to beat the heat."
Animal welfare specialists say that temperatures in the high 20s present a genuine risk to pets and must be handled with utmost care.
People are being told that it is far better for dogs to miss a few walks completely than to suffer the potentially fatal consequences of overheating.✅
The charity says that owners must completely pause normal routines and focus on keeping pets cool, comfortable, and calm at home. Experts say this means skipping walks entirely, stopping games of fetch, and avoiding any energetic outdoor exercise.👀
But for those without a garden, advice states owners should only nip their dogs out briefly to the nearest grassy area for them to toilet before heading straight back inside.
The heat could also potentially make dogs more irritable or frustrated.😢
Owners are being asked to keep a close eye on their pet's body language and give them enough space to cool down on their own terms.
Families can help by closing curtains in sunny rooms, using fans safely, and spreading multiple water bowls across the home and garden.
New figures from the RSPCA and Inspiring Vet Care show that vets dealt with 355 incidents related to suspected heatstroke in 2025.
A total of 66 per cent of those emergency cases occurred during the intense summer months.
