🔥Pet Fire Safety Day🔥

Why are our pets four-legged fire hazards?

Pets are more than capable of starting a fire accidentally. Dogs jumping onto hobs, cats knocking over candles – the list goes on.

Tips on preventing fires caused by pets;

1. Avoid open flames: A flickering candle creates a wonderful atmosphere in any home. But add a curious feline or a wagging canine tail into the mix and that candle instantly turns into a fire hazard. If you do light candles when a pet is around, never leave them unattended (the candle or your pet!). Even for a minute. Better still, you might want to invest in some flameless candles that feature bulbs rather than wicks. Much safer, and just as pretty.

2. Use oven and hob protectors: Ovens and hobs can be real danger points when it comes to fires caused by pets. Whether it’s a stray paw knocking an oven k**b or a hungry pup jumping up to reach leftovers from the hob, one wrong move can spell serious trouble. Covers will stop k**bs and switches being turned on by accident and always make sure stovetops are kept clear of flammable items (and delicious leftover food).

3. Keep fireplaces guarded: Forget the classic image of a dog sleeping in front of an open fire. Make sure fireplaces are covered with a fire guard and never leave a lit fire unattended when a pet is around.
Secure wires, cords and cables: Cats and dogs are all prone to having a good old chew on exposed wires, especially when they’re young. And once they get a taste for that cable, they really don’t know when to stop.

Make sure that your pets microchip details are up to date. If you are unsure of how to do this, we can scan your pet for their chip and then provide you with the details on how to ensure the information is all up to date. 🐝

🌟STAR OF THE WEEK🌟

This weeks star of the week is Max. He has been to see us recently to have a wound in his ear sewn up. He was rocking an amazing bandage from the emergency vets when he came to see us, but seems to be so glad to have that off now and has been enjoying soaking up the sunshine.

So glad to see you feeling better Max. 🐝

Today is world chocolate day! 🍫

We thought we would take this opportunity to give you some advice on chocolate and your pet!

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is perfectly safe for humans, but toxic for dogs, cats and rabbits.

The seriousness of chocolate poisoning depends on how much chocolate your pet has eaten, how big they are, and the cocoa content of the chocolate – the darker the chocolate the more toxic it’s likely to be.

Theobromine is a similar substance to caffeine and if it’s ingested at a toxic dose, it can cause the nervous system, guts, and muscles to go into overdrive. This typically causes symptoms such as:
- Excitement, restlessness, agitation and hyperactivity
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Drinking and weeing more than usual
- Abdominal (tummy) pain

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning usually appear within two to four hours but can take up to 12 hours. In severe cases, toxicity can cause:
- Fast breathing or panting
- Shaking, trembling and tremors
- High temperature (fever)
- Seizures
- A fast heart rate
- High blood pressure

When to contact your vet?
If you suspect your pet may have eaten chocolate, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. You should immediately call your veterinary practice for advice. You will need to tell them the type of chocolate, how much they ingested, the size of your pet, and when it happened.

If you have any questions please feel free to give one of our friendly team a call on 0113 824 2700. You can also contact us via Facebook messenger. 🐝

Going to the vet doesn't have to be nerve-wracking for your pet. You can lend us a paw to make their appointments a breeze. Here's how you can help:

🐾 Train your pet - Help your furry friend become more tolerant of vet visits by training them to feel comfortable during handling and examinations.

🎒 Prepare pet supplies - Organize your pet's supplies in advance. Have their vaccination records, medications, and any necessary paperwork ready to go.

🚗 Come prepared - Have your pet in a carrier or on a short leash - this ensures their safety. Bring any relevant information about their health, behaviour, or recent changes that could help us provide the most accurate diagnosis.

By working together, we can create a stress-free experience for your pet and make your appointments smoother and more efficient. 🐝

🌟 STAR OF THE WEEK 🌟

This weeks star of the week is Jackson.

Jackson has been super brave over the past week, his owners noticed a lump near his bottom that was irritating him. In consultation, vet Luke Green took a very quick cell sample called a fine needle aspirate and sent this to the lab for a**lysis. This inconspicuous mass turned out to be an a**l sac adenocarcinoma (cancerous mass) malignant tumour, only a few days later, Jackson has returned to us, had his blood work checked for raised calcium levels amongst other things, had an ultrasound scan to check his abdominal lymph nodes and then chest x-rays, all of these to ensure no spread of the initial cancer.

The great news for Jackson is no spread was noted, and surgery to remove the mass took place.

Jackson has been a super good boy throughout the whole process some of which take place whilst fully awake.

We at Beehive wish Jackson the most speedy recovery and he will be back to practicing his sit, stay, wait in no time 🐝
