So...I've had a few tasteful comments on my advocacy for E- collars. So let me be clear. Do I agree with them being legal..yes!!! Do I believe every dog need them..No! The comments state they are "cruel for pets" but they "can be used for malinous/ working breeds" so where do we draw the line?
The majority of breeds we own are working.. spaniels, German shepherds, collie dogs. The list goes on.
What do we do when treats, praise doesn't work. We have to view to other matters.. There is a common widespread misconception that Collars zap/shock your dog to discomfort. Yes this can happen if not used, and I stress CORRECTLY!
For dogs whose prey drive outweighs the positive of having food, praise etc.. what back up plan do we have?. Keep the dog on a lead? That is not life.. that is not mental enrichment.
All these people that have provided this negativity have learnt it from modules. Paper based. Not real.life experience.
In an ideal way, yes it would be Great. We do not live in an ideal world. There are distractions everywhere.
Dogs who are deaf can use the E-collar as a physical queue for recall because they CAN'T HEAR!!! But it gives them a life off lead. Dogs who want to rip every cow, horse and sheep to bits because it's in their breeds genetics.and they don't frankly give a s**t about the treat in your hand. And the data doesn't lie..look at Wales where the E-collar is banned.. live stock attacks are much higher than England and Wales combined. And as a result dogs getting shot by farmers is much higher. I can't say anymore, and I will die on this hill.
