At Hainault Hydrotherapy, we are able to offer pool or treadmill sessions for our clients. However, sometimes one is not suitable for every dog. During your initial consultation with us, we will discuss treatment options which will benefit your dog the most. Whilst we appreciate that owners may have a preference, there are a variety of things to consider when treating your dog with hydrotherapy.

HYDROTHERAPY POOL:
The hydrotherapy pool allows your dog to exercise safely in a weightless environment. Swimming is a great way for your dog to stretch out and can result in improved joint range of motion, thus improving their general mobility. Swimming can also help to improve your dogs’ front leg strength. However, swimming is unsuitable for dogs with cervical spinal injuries, as it can cause hyperextension of the neck.

UNDERWATER TREADMILL:
The underwater treadmill has been shown to be greatly beneficial for dogs suffering with hindlimb conditions. This is because, the therapist can control the water level and speed of the treadmill, which allows for gait re-education and muscle-targeting. Incline can also be implemented into a dog’s treadmill rehabilitation plan, to further increase their strength and overall condition. Amputees are unable to use the underwater treadmill, as they will be placing excess weight on their other limbs, and amputation also changes a dog’s biomechanics.

NATIONAL GREYHOUND DAY

Happy National Greyhound Day to the fastest "couch potatoes" in the world! While these sleek athletes are famous for reaching speeds of up to 45 mph, we know them best for their gentle souls and surprisingly relaxed nature. Because of their unique sprinting mechanics, Greyhounds benefit from the warm, buoyant water in a hydrotherapy setting! Whether they are retired racers enjoying a pampered life or active family pets, today we celebrate the grace and speed of this incredible breed!
