☀️ Bobbie said I should do a little reminder about our Hot Weather Policy! ☀️
I know you’ve probably seen so many hot weather posts recently, and they do all tend to say very similar things! But I just wanted to share a little reminder of what’s going through my mind when I’m planning our days over the summer, and why you might notice a few changes to your dog’s usual routine.
Every dog is different, so I don’t just look at the temperature alone. I also consider the ‘feels like’ temperature, as well as each dog’s breed, age, fitness, and individual needs.
🐾 From around 20°C, I start reviewing walks and routes carefully. This may even be sooner for some dogs depending on the conditions and the dog itself.
🐾 From 23°C, I’ll begin shortening walks where needed, choosing shady routes and making plenty of water stops.
🐾 At 25°C and above, I move to home visits and toilet breaks only, rather than taking dogs out for walks.
On every walk I always carry fresh water, but in warmer weather we’ll stop for water breaks more often, stick to shaded areas where possible, and make the most of safe places for a paddle to help everyone stay cool.
You may also notice that instead of small groups I switch some dogs to solo or paired walks. Large groups have never really been my focus anyway, and one of the reasons is that it reduces the amount of time dogs spend travelling during pick-ups and drop-offs. Even with air conditioning, a vehicle carrying several dogs can become warm while everyone is being collected or dropped home. I’d much rather minimise that time and prioritise your dog’s comfort and safety.
As always, every decision is made with your dog’s welfare in mind. Thank you for trusting me to keep my besties safe and comfortable! I know routine is important, but keeping everyone safe will always come first. ❤️🐶
