🐑ARE YOU USING TEASER TUPS?

What is a Teaser Ram?

A teaser ram is a vasectomised ram (surgically sterilised) used to stimulate ewes to cycle earlier or more in sync before the breeding season.
They cannot get ewes in lamb, but still produce normal levels of testosterone and show full mating behaviour.

Why Use a Teaser Ram?
• Bring ewes into season earlier – useful for out-of-season lambing.
• Synchronise oestrus – makes tupping and therefore the lambing period more compact.
• Increase conception rates – ewes are cycling before fertile rams are introduced.
• Detect silent heats – useful for AI or embryo transfer programs.

Management of Teaser Rams
• Vasectomy: Done by a vet, ideally at least 8 weeks before use to allow recovery, healing and that all fertile s***m has been expelled.
This is a simple operation done under a short general anaesthetic to remove a short section of both vas deferens. Cross bred rams often make good teasers due to hybrid vigour. Mature fit males make better teasers, but the procedure can be performed on ram lambs for the next breeding season.
• Identification: Clearly mark or ear tag as a teaser to avoid accidental use for breeding.
• Ratio: 1 teaser ram to 50-100 ewes.
• Condition: Keep in good BCS (3.5–4), sound feet, teeth and free from disease as you would a normal breeding tup. Monitor carefully for loss of condition – provide good grazing or supplementary feed during use.
• Longevity: A well-managed teaser can be used for several years.

Keep ewes separate from all rams (sight, sound, smell) for at least 4 -6 weeks beforehand.

Teasers need to go in 2 weeks before the real rams, i.e. 5 ½ months before you would like to start lambing.

Leave the teasers in a maximum of 14 days with the ewes. Take out and put in fertile rams. (When the fertile tups are put in, use a ram: ewe ratio of 1:25-30)
Ewes will first have a silent heat within 2-4 days, then 17-26 days later ewes will have a true heat where fertile rams will catch most first cycle. Any missed will cycle again 17 days later.

If you'd like to vasectomise a tup or would like further advice on tightening your breeding season, call our Farm Desk on ☎️01765 602396 or talk to your vet.

Last Tuesday we were joined by calf-rearing clients for an on-farm discussion about shed and pen design. The Hugills very kindly let us look at their systems and housing and Fitz and Ed talked about how we can maximise welfare for our calves. A highlight was incredible burgers from - thank you! Thanks to everyone who came along and all those who helped make it happen 🙂.

If you're headed to Wensleydale Show next Saturday 23rd August, and you're lucky enough to look younger than 25, please remember to bring ID. This year there has been a crack down on underage drinking and whilst as ever, we will be providing our clients with refreshments (and a BBQ!), we do need to satisfy the police that we have checked you are over 18. So! Don't forget your ID, and we'll see you there 👍🙂
(PS, please don't shoot the messenger 🙏)
