Part Loan Opportunity – Perfect Second Pony 🐴

I’m looking for a confident young rider or small adult to part loan my lovely pony Danny, with the hope that it may eventually become a full loan for the right person.

Danny is approximately 14.1/14.2hh and estimated to be between 8–12 years old. He has only had one long-term owner before me and has done a bit of everything, including cross-country, showjumping, pony camps, beach rides, fun rides and gallop tracks.

He has basic schooling, hacks alone and in company, and generally jumps between 60–95cm. He also loves a good pamper session and is happy to stand for hours being brushed and fussed over.

Danny is great with children but does need a confident and experienced rider. He can be cheeky at times and will test boundaries if allowed. He can occasionally nap when he’s feeling stubborn and can become a little headstrong when excited. He also feeds off his rider’s confidence, so someone who can confidently walk, trot and canter independently is essential, as he is not a lead rein pony. He can also occasionally drop a shoulder when a hind leg becomes a little stiff.

He is good to catch, lead, load and travel, although he may need a little reassurance loading alone. Once on board he travels quietly.

I’m looking for someone to ride and spend time with him 3–4 days per week. He must remain on his current yard. A financial contribution towards his upkeep is required, along with completing basic yard duties on your allocated days.

Third-party insurance is essential.

For safety reasons, any child under the age of 13 must be fully supervised by a parent or responsible adult at all times.

😲 £𝟷𝟻,𝟶𝟶𝟶 𝙳𝚒𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝚊𝚌𝚛𝚘𝚜𝚜 𝚊 𝚢𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝙵𝚞𝚕𝚕 𝙻𝚒𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢...

In December, we ran a UK-wide livery survey with 768 yard owners across 81 counties — and the results are... surprising. We knew pricing for livery sevrices was inocnsistent at least but this has made clear how much the prices can vary.

For stables full livery, the highest and lowest prices submitted differ by a staggering £15,000 over the course of a year. Yes… fifteen thousand pounds for what is supposed to be the same service.

You’d expect full livery to include → stable, grazing, 7-day care, hay, and bedding at minimum. But why such a huge difference? Some possibilities include:

→ Location: Prime areas with high property costs, or easy access, or cose to competition centres naturally command higher prices.
→ Facilities: Modern stables, riding facilities, good hacking, and extras on the yard like solariums, hot-wash water systems, can increase costs.
→ Running costs: Larger staff costs, insurance, or maintenance expenses may push prices up, while lower-priced yards may operate with reduced overheads.
→ Professional rider: Experienced riders or trainers may charge more for their expertise, attention to detail, and the added prestige of having your horse under their supervision.

Even without these factors, running costs have shot up for yard owners in recent years, with huge increases in employment costs, utilities, business rates, and — more recently — hay and straw. All of these factors mean many yards have had to raise their prices considerably. Don’t automatically dismiss a yard as “too expensive” — ask why it’s priced that way. Yards that are properly insured, fully compliant, and doing things by the book have to charge more simply to run a sustainable business. Paying a higher price often reflects peace of mind, quality of care, and professionalism, rather than being overpriced.

However, the survey also raises questions about the lowest-priced yards. Yes, some yards are lucky enough to have low running costs and outgoings, but for full livery it can often be difficult to know where these savings can be made. Some may be able to charge so little because they:

→ Treat it less like a professional business
→ Lack correct insurance or safety protocols
→ Do not pay business rates or declare their income fully
→ Do not employ legally
→ Fail to meet expected industry standards
→ Cut costs on maintenance or provisions

The takeaway? When looking for livery — full, part, or DIY — don’t rely on the price alone. Two yards offering “full livery” may provide completely different levels of care and facilities.

Ultimately, this survey highlights the importance of asking questions, visiting the yards, and understanding exactly what is included → so your horse receives the care and environment they deserve.

And if you’re a yard owner → are you charging enough? Do you know if your business is truly sustainable, or are you inadvertently subsidising the costs of your liveries? When did you last sit down to work out your running costs and check whether what you’re charging is actually viable for you?

It’s super important to review this regularly, because yards that charge too little can devalue the industry, especially if it’s because corners are being cut — which also undermines those yards that are doing everything properly.
