I like big floofs. There. I said it!

In 2014 my husband and I decided to get a dog. Perhaps I should rephrase that. Back in 2014 my husband finally relented and gave me permission to get a dog! So our search for a dog began and little did we know how much our lives would change...

We knew we preferred big dogs and had agreed on nothing smaller than a Border Collie, but that was pretty much our only criteria when we set off to visit our local rescue centres.

Well, there she was, all ears and legs, watching everything with a mix of confusion and excitement. Whilst my husband went off to make friends with a 6 year old Malamute, I had to go and introduce myself to the leggy one who’d not yet grown into her ears! She was friendly but cautious so I crouched down and let her come and give me a sniff. All ok, hesitant at first then “ok you seem nice” and she relaxed a bit. Oooo, look at that lovely face! Those ears are massive! She’s got a big, fluffy, curly tail! 1 year old Akita. Hmmm, she’s going to be big (that pretty much sums up my knowledge of the breed at the time) but she’s young enough to train and hopefully we’ll taker her home and all live happily ever after! “Husband! Come and meet this dog, she’s beautiful!”.

Fast forward 6 months... Two leather sofas, countless cushions and a carpet later and we are wondering why the heck we are still sane! She put us through the mill with awful separation anxiety, many issues around other dogs and stubborn as hell with practically everything, but we absolutely adore her. Consider us Akita owned and devoted fans of the breed. Since then we have become volunteers for two Akita rescue groups, have a whole new group of friends and I’m now a qualified groomer. And it’s all Bella’s fault!
