What a day 🤩 in January we decided to give the ginger terror one last chance at being a kids pony 🙈 fast forward 8 months and my little dream team are bringing home not only red rosettes but golden tickets and a reserve champion 🙌🏻🥰🏆 Kevvo adores his mini human and they make the cutest couple 🥰 although when he finds out she’s got her sights set on the showjumping ring next year he may change his mind 🤣🤣🙈

Coaching/schooling doesn’t have to be in an arena …. This is Freda. Freda’s owner contacted me as she was having problems with Freda out hacking such as napping, spinning and planting. Freda was worse in company using another horse as a barrier to moving forward. Medical issues had been explored and discounted as had various bits and gadgets….. fast forward 4 weeks and Freda is happily tootling round the village with me enjoying her work again 🙌🏻🙌🏻 all work has been done with no access to an arena or field to ride in. No arena 🤷‍♀️ no problem 😉 no need for it to be a barrier to progressing and having fun with our four legged friends 😎👌

Time flies when you are having fun 🤩 3 years ago today we picked this gangly legged Bambi up 🤣 110% one of the best buys I’ve ever made 💖 yes he has sass 🤣🤷‍♀️ but he’s one of the most versatile and genuine horses I’ve ever sat on, he tries his heart out for me every time we go out and I wouldn’t swap him for the world 🥰

Day out of “the office” today refreshing my first aid qualification 🤕😷🤒 course provider said he always knows a day full of equestrians is going to be an interesting one as between us we’ve generally had experience of every injury going 🤣🤣🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Today the lovely Foxy went off to his new home 🩵 Foxy’s owner contacted me in April with a view to selling Foxy, he’d not been ridden for 2 years and being a man of senior years (18) his owner was wanting to give him the best chance possible of finding a new forever home. In 4 months he’s transformed from fluffy field ornament to fit and healthy, ready for hacking and riding club fun 🤩 I hope his new owner has as much fun with him as I’ve had these past few months 😀🐴

Developing Empathy

Frustrated by your horse? Try this---

Go for a run. Yes, you, human rider. Intersperse your run with sets of push-ups. See how long it takes before you lose athletic buoyancy, before you “just can’t.”

Fatigue in a horse, which is pretty much the same thing that you just felt, creates leaning, tripping, stumbling, slow reactions, poor coordination, lugging on the hand, all sorts of what you may be mistaking for “bad behavior.”

The tired horse will feel just like a “disobedient” horse. And then what will happen to that horse if the rider doesn’t tune into the horse’s fatigue? You know exactly what will happen to the horse. It will get drilled on. Drilled on just when the exact opposite should happen.

Trainers who lack the ability to sense what the horse is going through are among the worst drillers, and they create tense, scared, resistant horses, and they then do something even worse, they blame the horse.

Change your mind set. Think how YOU would feel if you had gotten beyond your limits and then got ground on and punished to fix your bad behavior.

You think I’m kidding? You think this isn’t going to happen today, all across the world where people ride and drive horses? That unfit for the task horses won’t be cranked and pressured? Dream on.

The best thing that you can do if your goal is to become a competent trainer is to constantly be aware of your own frustration meter. And stop before you create damage, physical and emotional injury and distress. Get a little and end on that. If even a little seems elusive, DO NOT GRIND. Go walk, try again tomorrow. Don’t add fear and anxiety to the training process.

I will say this one more time---“Don’t add fear and anxiety to the training process.”

Why am I saying this so often? Because if I had learned this decades sooner, I would have been a far better trainer and horse person---That’s why. Learn, if you are capable of doing so, from the mistakes that others have made. Do not drill your horse.
