🐱 Did You Know? Cats Are Masters at Hiding Illness 🐱

Our feline friends are experts at masking pain and discomfort, which is why regular health checks are so important—even if your cat seems perfectly happy at home.

Keep an eye out for subtle changes such as:
🐾 Sleeping more than usual
🐾 Changes in appetite or thirst
🐾 Weight loss or gain
🐾 Hiding away more often
🐾 Changes in litter tray habits

Early detection can make a huge difference to your cat's health and wellbeing.

If you've noticed any changes in your cat's behaviour, or if it's been a while since their last check-up, we're here to help. Give us a call to book an appointment and keep your feline friend feeling their best. 💙

Pictured here, is the rather handsome Pascha who came in for his health check this week, his grandfather featured on a famous TV advert in the early 2000’s, can anyone guess which one?

☀️ 31°C IN CORNWALL: Local spots to avoid (and where to go instead!)☀️

While we’re experiencing this incredible heatwave across Redruth, Camborne, and St Ives today, our usual dog walking routines need a massive rethink. Standard tarmac pavements are already hot enough to blister paws! 🐾

If you're wondering how to safely exercise your dog today, here is our quick guide:

🚫 AVOID the midday heat in the woods: While the trees offer some shade, the air under a dense canopy can get incredibly stagnant, heavy, and humid during peak sun. Keep woodland walks to the very early morning or late evening.

🚫 AVOID the beaches at midday: Sand gets just as scorching hot as tarmac! If you can't comfortably hold the back of your hand to the sand for 7 seconds, it will burn your dog's paws.

✅ TRY a sensory 'brain game' at home: Skip the walk entirely during the hottest hours. Stuff a Kong or a favorite toy with dog-safe peanut butter or wet food and pop it in the freezer. It tires them out mentally without overheating them!

🐱 For our cats: Don't forget that white or pink-eared cats can easily get sunburned while lounging on sunny stone walls or patio slabs. A dab of pet-safe sunblock on their nose and ears goes a long way.

🐰 For our rabbits & small furries: Hutches can become absolute ovens today. Pop a couple of ceramic kitchen or bathroom tiles in the fridge for an hour, then place them in your rabbit's run. They will love lying flat on them to cool their bellies!

⚠️ Quick Reminder: Please check outdoor rabbits for flystrike twice a day in this 31°C heat, as flies are highly active right now.

Enjoy the sun safely! Here’s a picture of vet Eleanor’s dog, Wilbur, doing his best to hide away in the long grass! How are your pets’ keeping cool today? Drop us a picture in the comments!

And remember, we’re just at the end of the phone if your pet needs us! 📞❤️

🐾 Beach Bans & Summer Plans: Is your pet ready? 🏖️

With the weather hopefully warming up a little this weekend, timed with beach restrictions coming into play across St Ives and the coast, it’s the perfect time for a summer safety "switch-up" for ALL our pets!

Our teams at Medivet Monument Redruth, Monument Camborne, and St Ives have your essential May guide:

🐕 DOGS: The Beach Shift

Exploring more woodland or heathland like Tehidy or Carn Brea now? Watch out for ticks and adders. Staying on the dog-friendly sands? Keep an eye out for weaver fish and always check the tides!

🐈 CATS: The Sun Seekers

Pink noses and white ears can sunburn easily, which can lead to skin cancer. Look for a pet-safe sunblock free from Zinc Oxide and Salicylates (which are toxic if licked).

🐰 SMALL FURRIES: The Garden Party

Rising heat is a big risk for rabbits and guinea pigs. Keep runs shaded and check twice daily for "Fly-strike" — ask our nurses for advice on prevention!

🚗 EVERYONE: The Car Warning

"Not long" is too long. Even on a cloudy Cornish day, car temperatures can skyrocket. If you’re nipping into town, please leave your pets at home in the cool.

Where is your favourite "dog-ban-free" spot to explore? Or is your cat claiming the best sun-trap in the house? We’d love to see your photos below in the comments! 📸✨

P.S. We couldn’t resist sharing these two sand-diggers in our photo! Just a reminder to keep an eye on the "sand swallowers" while you're enjoying our beautiful beaches. 🏖️🐾

🐾 Monty’s Beach Day Mishap 🐾

Meet the lovely Monty, who visited us at Medivet St Ives whilst on his holidays. After a marathon session of chasing his ball on the beach the day before, Monty became very lethargic, had profuse vomiting and was feeling quite uncomfortable.

Our team suspected sand impaction—a condition that can happen when dogs accidentally ingest sand while playing with wet, sandy toys.

✨A True Team Effort✨

Because we are currently undergoing some exciting building improvements at our St Ives branch (more on this in due course!) We teamed up with our colleagues at our sister practice; Medivet Monument Redruth to ensure Monty had the best care possible:

• At St Ives: Monty was assessed, had some initial blood work done and was then started on vital intravenous fluid therapy, alongside pain relief and anti-emetics.

• At Redruth: He was transferred for X-rays and continued intensive nursing care with fluids and pain relief medication.

• Overnight: He spent the night with the wonderful team at CVETS for continued nursing care and veterinary supervision throughout the night.

• The Happy Ending: We’re delighted to say that Monty returned to us in St Ives the next morning for his final check-up and was given the all-clear to go home!

🏖️ Did you know?

Sand impaction is one of those hidden seaside hazards that can catch even the most diligent owners by surprise. It happens so easily when a wet ball gets covered in sand! We are so grateful to Monty's owners for letting us share his story to help other dog lovers stay "beach-wise" this summer.

We are so pleased to see Monty back to his happy self and enjoying the rest of his holiday (well away from the sand!).

Who knows local walks better than a Vet Nurse? 🐾

It’s a double celebration this May! Not only is it National Walking Month, but it’s also Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM).

Take a look at the photos below - Here’s just some of our amazing Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) out and about with their dogs; Gemma, Karina, Bekah, Dawn, Ellen and Alex!

To celebrate, they have put together their Top 4 "Clinical Tips" for your May adventures:

1. Check for "Hitchhikers": The ferns are growing fast! Our nurses recommend a thorough coat check after every walk. If you find a tick, don’t squeeze it—this can actually force bacteria into your pet's bloodstream. Use a proper tick tool or pop in and we’ll help.

2. Coastal Caution: For our St Ives regulars, be mindful of "Sand Impaction." If your dog swallows too much sand while fetching balls, it can cause a serious blockage. Switch to a "land ball" if they are heavy diggers!

3. Hydration & Salt Safety: Whether you’re climbing Carn Brea or strolling Porthmeor, the May sun is deceptive. Our nurses always carry fresh water; drinking sea water can lead to salt toxicity and severe stomach upsets.

4. The "Five-Second" Test: tarmac absorbs heat quickly. If the pavement feels hot to the back of your hand after five seconds, it will blister a dog's pads. Stick to the shaded woodland trails around Tehidy!

Our nurses are here to help your pets stay walk-ready all year round.

Where are you exploring this week? We’d love to see your "National Walking Month" photos in the comments below!

🐾 When was your pet’s last check-up? 🐶🐱

This gorgeous pair came for their 6 month health checks earlier on today and Vet Eleanor couldn’t resist trying to a get picture of those ears 😍

Regular health checks are so important as they help us to:

👀 Spot small issues before they become bigger problems

⚖️ Keep track of weight, teeth, and overall wellbeing

🩺 Make sure everything is just as it should be

Often, these check-ups give you peace of mind more than anything else—and we love being able to say “they’re doing great!” 😊

If you’re not sure when your pet is due, feel free to drop us a message or give us a call—we’re always happy to help.
