Blue tongue skinks (Tiliqua spp.) are hardy, docile reptiles that make great pets, especially for beginners. Here’s a comprehensive care guide to keep your skink happy and healthy:

1. Enclosure
• Size: Minimum 40-gallon tank (36”x18”x18”), but 4’x2’x1.5’ is ideal for adults.
• Substrate: Aspen, cypress mulch, coconut fiber, or a mix; avoid pine/cedar. Aim for a substrate that retains some humidity and allows burrowing.
• Hides: Provide at least 2 hides (warm and cool side), plus logs or decor for enrichment.
• Humidity: 30-50% for most species (Indonesian species need 60-80%).
• Temperature:
• Basking spot: 95-100°F
• Cool side: 75-85°F
• Nighttime: No lower than 70°F
• Lighting: UVB lighting (10-12 hours daily) is strongly recommended for vitamin D3 synthesis and overall health.

2. Diet
• Omnivorous: 50% veggies, 40% protein, 10% fruit.
• Protein: Cooked lean meats, canned dog food (high quality), insects (dubia roaches, crickets, superworms).
• Veggies: Collard greens, mustard greens, squash, carrots, green beans.
• Fruits (occasional): Berries, mango, papaya, melon.
• Calcium & vitamins: Dust food with calcium (with or without D3 depending on UVB use) 2-3x per week, multivitamin 1x/week.

3. Water & Cleanliness
• Always provide fresh water in a shallow dish.
• Spot-clean daily and deep-clean the enclosure monthly.

4. Handling & Temperament
• Blue tongue skinks are generally calm and tolerant.
• Handle gently and regularly to maintain their docile nature.
• Avoid sudden movements and support their whole body.

5. Shedding & Health
• They shed in patches. Humidity helps prevent stuck shed, especially on toes and tail.
• Watch for signs of illness: lethargy, lack of appetite, wheezing, or swollen limbs.
• Regular vet checks (especially for parasites) are good practice.

Crested Geckos

Green ameivas (Ameiva ameiva), also known as giant ameivas or Amazon racerunners, are active, fast-moving lizards native to Central and South America. They’re not commonly kept as pets, but they can be kept in captivity with the right setup and care. Here’s a breakdown of what they need:

Basic Care Guide for Green Ameiva

1. Enclosure
• Size: Adults need a large enclosure—at least 4’ x 2’ x 2’ (120 x 60 x 60 cm). Bigger is always better.
• Type: Glass or PVC enclosures with secure lids. They are escape artists and very active.
• Substrate: Use a deep layer (4–6 inches) of coconut fiber, organic topsoil, or cypress mulch to allow burrowing and maintain humidity.

2. Heating and Lighting
• Basking Spot: 100–110°F (38–43°C)
• Cool Side: 75–85°F (24–29°C)
• Night Temp: Can drop to 70–75°F (21–24°C)
• UVB Lighting: Essential! Use a high-quality UVB bulb (e.g., Reptisun 10.0) for 10–12 hours/day to help synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium.

3. Humidity
• Humidity Level: 60–80%
• Mist the enclosure daily and provide a large water bowl. Monitor with a hygrometer.
• A humid hide can also be helpful.

4. Diet
• Carnivorous: Feed a variety of insects (crickets, roaches, mealworms, superworms, silkworms), occasionally small pinkie mice, and cooked eggs.
• Supplements: Dust insects with calcium and multivitamins (calcium every other feeding, multivitamin once a week).

5. Behavior & Handling
• Ameivas are very active and not typically handleable. They are fast and easily stressed.
• Best as a display species rather than a hands-on pet.

6. Cleanliness
• Spot clean daily, replace substrate as needed.
• Clean the entire enclosure every 4–6 weeks with reptile-safe disinfectant.

Blue tongue skinks (Tiliqua spp.) make great pets and can thrive in the UK with the right care. Here’s a comprehensive guide tailored to UK conditions:

1. Species

The most common species kept in captivity is the Northern Blue Tongue Skink (Tiliqua scincoides intermedia), known for being docile and hardy. Care can vary slightly with other species like the Indonesian varieties.

2. Enclosure
• Size: Minimum 4ft x 2ft x 2ft (120cm x 60cm x 60cm) for an adult.
• Type: Wooden vivariums with good ventilation are ideal in the UK due to better heat retention.

3. Heating & Lighting
• Basking spot: 32–35°C (daytime)
• Cool end: 22–26°C
• Night temp: Should not drop below 18°C (use a ceramic heater if needed)
• UVB Lighting: Required (12% T5 UVB tube is ideal) — 10–12 hours per day.
• Use a thermostat to control heating and always monitor with digital thermometers.

4. Substrate
• Suitable substrates: Aspen, coco fibre, or soil/sand mix (avoid anything dusty or that can cause impaction)
• Provide areas for burrowing and humidity (around 40-60% for Northerns; 60–80% for Indonesians)

5. Diet
• Omnivorous: Feed a variety of protein, vegetables, and occasional fruit.
• Protein sources: Lean mince, cooked chicken, dog/cat food (grain-free, high quality)
• Veg: Butternut squash, collard greens, dandelion leaves, carrots
• Fruit (occasional): Blueberries, mango, banana
• Dust food with calcium + D3 2–3 times a week, and multivitamin once a week.

6. Hydration
• Provide a shallow water dish (changed daily).
• Mist lightly if needed (especially for Indonesian species or during shedding).

7. Handling & Temperament
• Generally very tame and tolerate handling well.
• Start slow and let them get used to you.

8. Shedding
• Provide rough decor (like cork bark or rocks) to aid shedding.
• Keep an eye on toes and tail tips for retained shed.

9. Health & Vets
• Look for a reptile-savvy vet in your area (some exotic vets in the UK specialise in reptiles).
• Common issues: Respiratory infections (from low temps), metabolic bone disease (from poor lighting/diet), parasites.

10. Legal & Ethical Considerations
• No special licence is needed in the UK.
• Always buy captive-bred specimens from reputable breeders or rescues — avoid wild-caught imports.

Let me know if you want a checklist, shopping list, or help finding a UK supplier or vet!
