🐾 Training Tip Thursday – Recall Basics 🐾

A reliable recall can make walks safer and more fun. 🌳🐶
✅ Start in a quiet space with no distractions
✅ Call your dog in an excited, happy tone
✅ Reward generously when they return, treats, praise, even a quick game!

Over time, build up to more distracting environments.

🐾 Training with Katharine - Pawgress Report - Sarbi 🐾

I went to see this clever boy for his second session on Monday this week.

I started introducing the ‘look’ command every time before he got his reward for any other behaviour.

This helped him realise that I wanted him to check in before taking his treat.
For example; if I asked him to ‘leave’ a treat and he did, he would still have to check in before he got to take it.

Well of course it didn’t take long before he was looking at me without me asking. What a good boy!! Such fun to train!

🐾 Training with Katharine - Pawgress Report - Sandy 🐾

This weekend I met up with Sandy and her owner for her second session.

It was clear that they had been putting in the time because what a difference!!

When I first met Sandy she was a bit worried about strangers and would sometimes growl when she passed them.

We have worked on getting her to check in when she is feeling unsure and this week we refined it a bit by adding steps on what to do when getting her focus back is tricky.

We used our bodies to turn her away to regain her attention and remind her that we were there and then tried again with a check in.

She did brilliantly!!

I have every confidence that they will continue to progress and I am so pleased with how far they have come!

🐾 Training Tip Thursday – Loose Lead Walking

Does your dog pull on the lead? 🚶‍♂️🐕

Try this: when your dog starts pulling, stop walking. Wait until the lead slackens, then move forward again. Consistency is key, your pup will learn that pulling doesn’t get them anywhere!

📩 Need extra support with lead training or other walking skills? Get in touch — we’d love to help.

🐾 Training with Katharine - Sonny 🐾

Over the weekend I went to visit Sonny.

Sonny is the sweetest boy and so keen about life but he has grown into a bit of a lead puller and the bigger he gets, the harder it is for his owner to manage.

It is very common for dogs to pull on the lead because they are constantly reinforcing the behaviour. They pull from A to B and they get there so the think, ‘to get there I need to pull’ and so they do it again, prove their own point and so on and so on 🙈

We worked on teaching Sonny that if he pulled, he didn’t get anywhere. We also worked on using our bodies to direct him to remind him that there is someone attached to his lead!

By the end he seemed to work out that he needed to stay close and concentrate because this crazy dog trainer could be changing direction any minute 😂 he also began to realised that to go forward, the lead needed to be loose.

🐾 Training with Katharine - Bently 🐾

Last Friday Bently, his owner and I braved the weather to work on some training.

Bently is a typical Schnauzer, a little suspicious and vocal.
However his owners are concerned that is is leaning towards reactivity so we got straight to work to nip it in the bud.

We worked on keeping Bently’s focus around distractions and teaching him to ‘leave it’ and come away.

We worked towards Bently noticing a distraction but making the choice to come away by himself without lunging and barking.

By the end he was getting the hang of it and reaping the rewards of making good decisions!

🐾 Training with Katharine - Pawgress Report - Harry 🐾

Last week I met Harry in the park for our third session.

It was clear from the off that his owners have been putting in the practice so that was fab to see!

We upped the anti for Harry a bit because I brought something that he has been unsure of in the past; a ghastly child!

My daughter Matilda is 12 but a farm kid, brilliant with animals and very respectful so follows instructions to the letter.

We started by getting Matilda to come past Harry but every time she did she threw a treat for him to find so that a) he could see that she was adding value, not taking away and b) was giving him a job to redirect his focus and channel his anxiety.

We then progressed to adding more movement and speed.

We then moved to having Harry by his owner sitting on a bench and once again, playing find it games for him every time people came past.
By the end, every time a passer by came, Harry was anticipating his find it. He did really well!

I look forward to our next session where we will once again be upping the anti in a more busy area to build on the tactics we have established so far. I have every confidence that Harry will smash it!

🐾 Training with Katharine - Sarbi 🐾

Yesterday I went round to see Sarbi.

Whilst Sarbi is a very good boy his owners want me to work on some higher level obedience as he is so capable and absolutely loves to learn!

I have never worked with a Malinois before so I was really excited to get started.

He and I started with the basics; getting him to look at me, perfecting a heel and then we started to introduce the ‘break’ command. This is basically a clear cue that says ‘go and be a dog’.

If I get him to heel, he is not allowed to leave my side until I say ‘break’.

If I ask him to ‘wait’ whilst I hide some treats, he is not allowed to find them until I say ‘break’.

The command is the job and the break is the release from the job.

I am really looking forward to our next session to further hone these skills and level up his learning to new challenges 🤩

🐾 Training with Katharine - Teddy 🐾

Yesterday I went to meet Teddy and his new family.

Teddy is 18 months old and doesn’t know much, bless him. He wants to say ‘hello’ to everyone on his walks which is lovely but not always ideal.

We worked on getting his focus on his owners and getting his to control his impulses.

His owners worked really hard in showing him where the boundaries were but also by giving him lots of praise when he made good decisions.

I look forward to catching up with them in a couple of weeks to further their training journey 🥰

🐾 Training Tip Thursday 🐾

Teaching “Leave It”

The “Leave It” command is a game-changer for keeping your dog safe and well-behaved! 🐶✨

Step 1: Hold a treat in your closed hand and let your dog sniff it.
Step 2: Say “Leave it.” Wait for your dog to back off or look at you.
Step 3: The moment they do, reward them with a treat from your other hand and lots of praise.

💡 Tip: Keep sessions short and positive — 5 minutes a few times a day works wonders!

With patience, your dog will learn to ignore tempting items and focus on you instead. Perfect for walks, mealtimes, and everyday life! 🐾💛

📩 If you’d like more guidance with training your dog in any area, get in touch — we’re happy to help!

🐾 Training with Katharine 🐾

We had another wonderful evening of classes on Monday night!

My first star of the week went to Betty! I am just so pleased with how far her owner and her have come! A couple of weeks ago Betty was a bit distracted but this week, what a difference! She did some beautiful loose lead walking round the course and was really conscious of her owner and the changes in direction. Well done, Betty!!

My second star was Daisy! Daisy has only been with her owner for a couple of months but you wouldn’t know it. Fabulous focus and lots of checking in! She absolutely smashed it with every task she was set, great work, Daisy!!

I look forward to seeing them all next week to further work on all these fantastic skills 🤩
