Heartbroken Owner Pleads for Help After Beloved Dog Swept Away in Redditch River
A Redditch man has issued an emotional appeal after his dog was swept away by fast-moving river currents during heavy rainfall on Saturday.
AJ, the owner of a dog named Bonnie, said the incident happened while the pair were playing on the grass area beside the river at Arrow Valley Park, when she leapt into the water. He told how he tried to stop her, aware that the river was running quickly after recent rain, but she got into difficulty shortly after entering the water.
AJ said he immediately jumped in after her, managing to grab Bonnie with one hand while clinging to a large log with the other. However, he described the current as “incredibly strong” and said he struggled to hold on to the 37kg dog.
“Despite all my efforts, I couldn’t hold onto her for long,” he said. “I had to let go to save myself. I watched in horror as she was swept away by the powerful current.”
He remained stranded on the log for around 15 minutes until a passer-by heard his calls for help and contacted emergency services. Police, ambulance crews and search teams attended the scene.
Several officers at the scene recognised Bonnie from an incident earlier this year, when she made the front page of the Redditch Standard after discovering a bag of drugs in a local park. She was praised by police at the time.
AJ described Bonnie as his “best friend” and “hero”, saying she had “given her life” for him.
He is now urging people in the Redditch area to report any sightings along the river.
“Please, if anyone around Redditch spots her body along the river, contact the authorities or me,” he said. “I just want to give her the proper burial she deserves.”
He also thanked members of the public for their support following the incident.
