What have we learnt from Challenge Sheep??

As many of you know, Dawn has been involved as a facilitator in AHDB’s 7 year long Challenge Sheep project which drew to a close last autumn.

With tens of thousands of data points collected we now have some exciting trends coming out of the project. Please join us to discuss what we have learnt and how this might be applicable to your flock.

📣Some exciting news! 📣

Earlier in the year, we were proud to share that Dawn had been shortlisted for Agricultural Advisor of the Year at the National Women in Agriculture Awards - and this week, we're delighted to announce that she won at an awards ceremony in London this week! 🏆

A fantastic and well-deserved achievement, recognising Dawn's dedication, expertise and commitment to supporting the agricultural community.

A few words from Dawn:

"I am very honoured and humbled to have won this award but the real heroes are the clients we work with every day. I'm so passionate about farming and its future and it's easy to genuinely love my job (not always at 2am) when I work alongside such great people. Thank you to the colleagues and clients who collaborated to nominate me for this award and to all the hardworking farmers we work with week in, week out. Another chapter in my book if I ever write it!"

I’m sure you will all join us in congratulating Dawn on this amazing achievement! 👏

Feel Good Friday 😊

Here’s a lovely set of twins delivered by Vicky. The first calf presented true breech (tail first) which required careful correction and delivery. Breech calves are very often a twin so upon checking the cow Vicky found his brother who arrived into the world soon after.

Cow and calves are all doing well.

Today we recognise the dedicated women across all the departments of the practice. Clevedale is proud to be a mixed practice, with our teams showing dedication, skill and compassion across all species.

Veterinary work isn’t always glamorous - it’s muddy, emotional, challenging and fast-paced - but also deeply rewarding.

The farm team are privileged to work with some incredible women in agriculture and we salute you.

Here’s to putting a whole lot of heart into everything we do 💚 🐄 💚 🐑 💚

🗣Our brilliant vet Rob is setting up a 'Beef Benchmarking Discussion Group'.

This discussion group is aimed at sharing experiences in spring calving beef suckler herds to increase the number of calves reared.

We are looking for anyone with a spring calving suckler herd. No upper or lower limit to numbers, all welcome to join. We are hoping to have a range of herd sizes and ages of people join. Ultimately we hope to share knowledge and experience and hopefully wean more calves.

This is a voluntary initiative open to all, and you will be able to join or leave at any point. If wanting to join we will ask for some information relating to pregnancy, abortion, and calf mortality to discuss anonymously within the group. The data will not be shared with anyone outside of the practice or discussion group.

The plan would be to meet approximately three times a year to discuss the anonymised data. The plan is also to discuss a topic relevant to the time of year – such as fertility, abortion, young stock health etc.

📧We have sent out information and a link to a questionnaire to clients that we have a valid email for. If you would like to be involved but haven't received an email please contact the Upleatham practice on 01287 623802 or email [email protected]

The magic of fluids ✨ , a before and after story.

Experienced farm vet Vicky recently attended this collapsed calf. She was unable to stand due to severe dehydration from scour. These calves become extremely sick very quickly, the most common causes being Rotavirus, Coronavirus, Cryptosporidium and E.Coli.

Vicky’s prompt treatment of 5 litres of intravenous fluid therapy (IVFT) lead to a rapid recovery, to standing and drinking milk within a few hours and undoubtedly saved the calf’s life.

Keep an eye on our page for tips on reducing scour incidence as we head into spring calving.

With lambing time approaching, I am pleased to say that after a difficult time for medicine availability, long acting penicillin is once again back in stock. 🥳 Long may it last! 💉

Please remember we are required to visit at least annually to be able to prescribe medicines, especially antibiotics to your livestock so please book in for a review visit if we haven’t seen you for a while to ensure you can get what you need when you need it.

Medicine review visits can be tied in with the generation of a VAN number or with an AHWP visit, please ask one of our experienced farm team for further information.

While the weather may be bleak and cold, lambing time is well underway 🐑. Roll on spring 🌞.

With forage in short supply this season, getting pre-lambing feeding right has never been more finely balanced. Speak to one of the farm vets about how some bloods can assess the nutritional status of the ewes, ensuring lamb viability, colostrum quality and milk supply are optimised. 🐑

There is still time to access funding for Animal Health and Welfare Review visits and the good news is that available funding has increased.

You are also available to access review funding for more than one species under the same agreement number and with follow up funding this can add up to a significant pot of funding.

Please chat to any of the farm vets for further information and guidance on application and required testing.
