Starks and Barks

Starks and Barks I offer dog walking, pet sitting and pet taxi. I also have experience with difficult dogs and offer cat, rabbit and reptile care.

I can also give cats fluids and medication if needed My name is Sam, I have been running Starks and Barks for the last 8 years. I started out in the video games industry as a QA and French Localisation tester at TT Games Publishing(2008-2011). Sadly my company moved the QA department out of the area and I was unable to move so I accepted the redundancy package offered. I then moved to Microsoft R

eading (2012-2012) to do testing for them, as they only work on short term contracts once my project was over I was out of a job so I volunteered with Cats Protection, I answered their phones on a weekend and provided advice to the callers as well as taking details of lost/found cats, new adoption requests and rehoming requests to be passed on to the correct team. I also volunteered with a local dog rescue and took their dogs out for walks as often as I could. Through CP I got employed with a company providing pet taxi for clients as well as animal transport from the local vet to the overnight hospital. I realised very quickly that although the work was a bit unpredictable, I loved it and wanted to do it full time. I set up Starks and Barks and got a couple clients. At first I only had a few dogs but that quickly expanded to more dogs and cats. I worked 7 days a week from 8am - 10pm as I still worked with the taxi company and eventually gained some wonderful regular clients. In 2009 my husband and I adopted Alfie from Cats Protection, he was only 3 months old and had been dumped in someone's garden and left to starve. I met Honey in 2015 at the vet while waiting for my overnight cat transport to be ready. She had been signed over to Cats Protection as she was missing the litter and her owners couldn't afford to investigate what was wrong. CP struggled to find someone to foster her so my husband and I agreed to foster her long term Sadly after 6 years with us she passed away in June 2021 from cancer. She was well loved and had a wonderful retirement with us. In 2016 we welcomed my son who has joined me (until 2020/2021 due to school) on every dog walk and pet sitting job. all my cats and dogs love spending time with him and he is learnt how to look after animals. Sadly with Covid-19 and the lockdowns in 2020 I had to put my business on hold, I was in regular contact with all my clients and I'm happy to say that I have all my dogs back including some new ones as well as some of my cat clients as we start to slowly recover from the pandemic. I understand how difficult it is to leave pets and go on holidays, I used to leave Alfie and Honey at a Cattery when we left but after two stays, they made it clear they hated it so I would book my fellow pet sitters to come and look after them for me. I am fully insured and dbs checked (all proof is given at our first meeting) and comfortable giving medication (fluids, tablets, eye drops) to your cat should they need it. Services:

I offer pet sitting in the comfort of your own home. I will feed your pet, clean any litter or hutch and change the water. I will spend a minimum of 30 minutes with your pet and ensure they get cuddles and play time. I charge £11 for one visit a day or £18 for two visits a day. Initial meet and greet is free and we will go over all the pet care you require and go over the terms and conditions, fill in your pets information and show proof of my insurance and dbs checks. I send daily updates which include photos and videos via WhatsApp. In the case of small animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs, I will prepare the fruit and veg on the day and ensure all fruit and veg is fresh. If the care is longer than a week, I will go shopping to replenish the fresh food. I will do the same for wet or dry food for cats if it's running low. I will always attach the receipt to the invoice and send photographic proof if the invoice is sent via email. I am flexible so if your return is delayed, let me know as soon as possible so I can make sure your pet is cared for until your return. If there are any issues with your pet during your absence, I will let you know as soon as possible and contact your local vet to book an appointment. Areas covered:

I’m sad to say that beautiful Jasper crossed the rainbow bridge last night. It was sudden and unexpected and I’m devastated for his owners. He was, and always will be such a wonderful dog.

I started walking him in 2021 on his own as he was a bit reactive to other dogs. I slowly started introducing him to other dogs and the day he met Shadow it was clear they would be best friends. He and Shadow loved to run around together, play tug of war with sticks and not share the ball when I would throw one. Shadow loved to poke him so that they’d run around together, our walks were never quiet as they’d constantly bark for joy.

It has been such a privilege to get to know him, to watch him go from only on lead walks to doing all walks off lead, we only had recall issues when squirrels were involved, he would sit at the base of a tree and whine that he couldn’t get them but eventually he would rejoin Shadow and his friends to play.

He was so wonderful with Hugo & Thibault, so gentle and absolutely loved when they joined as they’d sneakily (or so they thought) feed him and the gang fistfuls of treats which made everyone’s day.

I want to say a big thank you to his owners for trusting me with their gorgeous pet, I will never forget him and I will miss hearing him bark excitedly when I pulled into the driveway. 🌈

Happy Christmas/Joyeux Noël to all my clients! I’m spending Christmas morning and evening with various pets today and the next few days.

I will be taking some time off next week and maybe an extra few days as we’ve had a rather stressful end to the year. I’m looking forward to many more adventures with all my cats and dogs in 2026 ✨️❣️🎄

On the 11th of Nov 2025 I celebrated 12 years of Starks and Barks. It’s been an amazing 12 years caring for so many different pets and having two children inbetween. Hugo and Thibault are growing up with more pets than most kids and get so excited when they join on jobs.

I’ve not been great at posting on socials recently as I’ve been incredibly busy and I’m happy to say that I’m now fully booked for Christmas. I may be able to squeeze a few visits in if clients need. Here’s to another 12 years and beyond with all the wonderful cats, dogs and rabbits 🐾

Hugo and I flew into Lyon last night to see our favourite French rapper, Soprano, this evening. We had a ticket mixup so ended up closer to the stage on the side but still had a good view. It was Hugo’s first concert and he is absolutely exhausted and has gone to bed so he’s awake enough for our early flight back tomorrow morning.

I’ve been dying to see Soprano in concert and its so great that I have someone to join me now

I haven’t posted in a long time as I’ve been so busy social media takes a back seat but I’d like to welcome to Nell who got adopted by Teddy’s family recently. Her first walk on Monday was rather dramatic as she slipped her collar and went on a wonderful zoom around the woods with Teddy and Jasper.

It took a little while to get her back but thankfully Teddy helped and the rest of the week was rather uneventful. She is so cuddly and friendly and was right at home with the rest of the gang from the start. I’m looking forward to seeing her flourish and maybe one day be allowed to zoom around off lead 🚨🚨

Happy 2nd birthday to Thibault. I can’t believe it’s already been 2 years. His favourite thing to do is join on walks and play with all the dogs. He’s starting nursery on weds for 3 mornings a week so he won’t be hanging out with some of his doggy friends sadly

We had a lovely day celebrating Hugo’s 9th birthday (I can’t believe he’s that old). He and Thibault enjoyed lots of cake and playing with his presents in the garden. He’s grown so much in the last year, has gotten more independent and he’s very excited for the school year as he is allowed to walk home from school on his own

For the last week and a bit, I’ve been looking after Christopher and Daisy who turned 1 a little while ago). I met them this time last year when they were around 2 months old and fell in love with them straight away. Unfortunately this morning I found Christopher had been hit by a car and left on the road opposite his house. Sadly he had already passed when I arrived so all I could do was wrap him in a towel and call his owner to let them know.

The phone call this morning is one of the hardest calls I’ve ever made, I am heartbroken for them and for Daisy. As a pet sitter and pet owner I have to be ready for situations like this but it doesn’t take away the pain we feel when a pet we have watched grow up passes away in such an awful and lonely way. Daisy will get tons of hugs, she was already meowing for her brother when I arrived this morning and I expect will be doing the same when I arrive later 🌈

Thibault has been helping me look after Skye this week by showing her his toy car and giving her lots of strokes. We’ve also been looking after Olly and Goose who, according to them, have never been fed before. Goose looks quite vicious in the photo however he is such a sweetheart and meows dramatically to let you know he is dying of starvation 🧡

I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to post photos of all my lovely cats and dogs and it will probably be another month before I update as I am fully booked until September now.

We’ve had some great weather so I’ve done a few pop in visits with some of the dogs and played in the garden as it’s been too hot for walks when I arrived

We’ve had some very important guests stay with us for the last week, they’re quite shy so only come out when I’m cleaning the hutch. They belong to Bella’s owners and will be heading home on Thursday. Tigger spent the first day giving the hutch and run a good sniff but overall doesn’t really care. He does however like sitting on the hutch and meowing to be let in.

I don’t have a permanent hutch or space for rabbits and guinea pigs but if anyone wants me to keep them at mine and can provide their hutch, I’m happy to have them. I will also go out and get fresh veggies when they run out
