Meet Diaz, one of our Student Veterinary Nurses. We asked Diaz some questions to get an insight into her journey and experience into veterinary nursing! πŸ₯°

1. Why did you choose to become a VN/train/work in the nursing profession?

"I have got an animal management college diploma and wanted to build on my knowledge and experience by focusing on nursing in the veterinary industry. I have also been to South Africa on a eco trip and loved seeing all the different animals and helping support the local game reserve. I like to see patients improve and get better, know we have done everything we can, it's also nice to see their owners happier and supporting them."

2. What do you enjoy most about the job?

"I love caring for animals and seeing patients improve and get better. I really enjoy consults as I get to interact with animals as well as their owner's. It's nice to build a relationship with patients as well as clients."

3. What is your favourite thing to be involved in at work?

"My favourite thing is Inpatient care as you get to look after them from start to finish and I can make their stay as comfortable and positive as possible. I do also love monitoring general anaesthetics as well so it's hard to pick just one!"

4. What's your favourite animal and do you have any pets?🐱🐾🐱

"Cliche but I love every animal, my close favourites have to be dogs and exotics!🐾🐍 My partner's family has a Golden Retriever called Cooper who is a lovely, playful boy! My family also has a bouncy Spaniel called Maisie and a Cockapoo called Lottie🐢."

5. Do you have anything in the veterinary field you'd like to achieve in the future?

"I would love to expand my knowledge on anaesthetics in further education (maybe a certificate). I also would love to work more with exotics as I have previous experience in exotic animal care."

1. Why did you choose to become a VN/train/work in the nursing profession?

"I chose to become a veterinary nurse due to being introduced to animals from a very young age. I grew up on a cattle farm so was used to seeing the vets come out and helping them, knowing that's what I wanted to do!"

2. What do you enjoy most about the job?

"My favourite part of the job is monitoring general anaesthetics or getting involved in surgeries where I can!"

3. What is your favourite thing to be involved in at work?

"I love a good dental cleaning, doing a scale and polish is always a good day or getting involved with prepping patients for surgery. "

4. What's your favourite animal and do you have any pets?

"My favourite animal has to be dogs or any small furries like guinea pigs πŸ™‚ I have a dog of my own, Bailey, who is a 6 year old staffie cross"

5. Do you have anything in the veterinary field you'd like to achieve in the future?

"In the future I'd like to focus on exotics, specifically the surgical nursing aspect of this (monitoring general anaesthetics etc.) or emergency and critical care."

1. Why did you choose to become a VN/train/work in the nursing profession?

"I previously studied a degree and Masters in Ecology Surveying and management which was really interesting and as I love animals and wanted to help them, but longed for more direct interaction with animals and hands-on care, making veterinary nursing the perfect fit for me!"

2. What do you enjoy most about the job?

"I love looking after inpatients and getting to make sure they are comfortable, tailoring their care to them and making sure they are the most relaxed they can be! I also love nurse clinics as it's nice to build relationships with pets as well as their humans!"

3. What is your favourite thing to be involved in at work?

"I think most veterinary nurses would agree with me that a kitten or puppy health check is probably the best part of the job! But I do love a good wound clean and bandage or a satisfying dental scale and polish!"

4. What's your favourite animal and do you have any pets?

"My favourite animals are all in the cat family, lions tigers and leopards! I have two cats: Bruce (ginger) and Belle (tabby) who were rescue kittens at work, they are best friends!"

5. Do you have anything in the veterinary field you'd like to achieve in the future?

"I would love to be a ward nurse one day, nursing complicated and critical patients but for now I am enjoying all aspects of veterinary nursing in a first opinion practice as its so varied and every day is different!"
