The autumn equinox falls on Monday 22 ' September and marks the start of autumn, when day and night are equal. It's a seasonal shift that can affect your pet's routine, energy levels and outdoor habits.

How does the autumn equinox affect your pet? 🐶🐱

As the seasons shift, your dog might enjoy longer walks in the cooler weather. While you're out and about, keep an eye out for seasonal hazards like mushrooms, antifreeze and ticks.

Cats, on the other hand, may start spending more time indoors, seeking warmth and comfort. With less outdoor roaming, it's important to keep them mentally stimulated: think cosy hideouts, interactive toys or window perches to watch the falling leaves. 🍂

Toxins your pet should avoid in autumn 🍁

Autumn Pet Toxins: Horse Chestnuts (conkers)

The toxic ingredient in conkers is also found in the leaves and bark of the tree, so keep an eye out to make sure your pet doesn't eat these either. Conkers are also a choking hazard, and can potentially cause bowel obstructions if swallowed whole, which may require emergency surgery. Signs to look for in your pet include vomiting and diarrhoea, excessive drooling, excessive thirst or reduced appetite. In severe cases, ingestion can cause muscle tremors or seizures.

Just like us if we injure ourselves during exercise or through wear and tear as we age, our pets can also end up with discomfort or pain in their limbs, causing lameness. This may be a breed disposition like hip dysplasia in dogs, your cat jumping from a fence at an odd angle and injuring their leg or perhaps an aging pet showing the first signs of osteoarthritis.

Toxins your pet should avoid in autumn 🍂

Autumn Pet Toxins: Acorns

Acorns are also a choking hazard and can cause intestinal damage if ingested whole. Signs of acorn poisoning to look for include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and dehydration.

In rare cases, untreated incidents of acorn poisoning have led to kidney and liver failure, so always speak to your vet as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has ingested acorns.

SEPTEMBER COVER PHOTO WINNER!!

A huge thank you to everyone who sent in their adorable photos of their furbabies, we just love seeing them here in clinic. This is getting harder and harder to choose as they're all so, so adorable!

But our winner for September is.... Molly 💕

She was such a beautiful girl who we all loved at yourvets Rayleigh. She will be missed so much 🐾

We will be doing this again each month so there will be plenty more chances to get them up on our cover photo.
