Worth getting up early, as after a dark and cold early morning blast around the M25 which made me think of the drivers back in the day at Le Mans, arrived at Brooklands at 7.42, and with no one around managed to get some photos of the car next to Concorde!

Great photo on the Brooklands Motorsport day website which is this Sunday, of me negotiating Druids on a damp track day at Brands. Following on from my post a couple of weeks back about buying the set of Porsche 917 panels, and what do you do next!

Simple, build a wood frame to assemble the panels ensuring all the major dimensions are accurate…..and then stick 2001 reflective dots on the body and have it scanned. This was early 2012, and the scanning technology has moved on a tad, but the results are still the same you get an stl file which is huge and very difficult to manipulate. There is software that can generate a surface but that cost about £4k, so I had X, Y, and Z sections cut through the stl file and surfaced myself.

I did as we do in the Ford world and surfaced one side and reflected the RHS to the LHS and that’s when I found out the screen is not central, it’s offset 10mm from the centreline! Well the designs and bodies were built in 1968/9 and CAD did not exist!

First of the Drivers Union cars to arrive at Salon Prive on Sunday, and had the opportunity to get some photos of the car with the early morning sun and the lake in the background. Off to the Concours tomorrow at Hampton Court again with the Drivers Union.
My Icon 917K has been living at SVP in the midlands for the last few weeks in preparation for a collaboration with SVP to build an exclusive run of 10 cars with Redtek 3.8L twin turbo engines. Power starting at 500bhp in 870kg, giving the the authentic opportunity to experience what the drivers and actors experienced driving the originals 917’s in 1970 and 71.

My road legal ICON 917K homage doing shake down runs on the local dual carriageway back in September 2019 with the original 1st September 2019 registration plate. “The Canoe” was reversed engineered and designed to be accurate to the originals, but using a Porsche 964 Flat 6 as can’t quite afford the £1million for a Flat 12! Also engineered to meet and pass the stringent UK IVA requirements to get correct road legality.

Back in Feb 2014 we displayed at RaceRetro, with a set of body panels sitting on the newly completed chassis, and created a lot of attention. Seemed sensible to call the RaceRetro team and asked if they would like to display the finished car 10 years on at the 2024 show, to which they said “oh yes” what a great story. As we all know the local river burst it’s bank and 2024 was cancelled. I emailed RaceRetro again this January just to make sure they still wanted it 2025, and the same answer!

This morning my Icon 917K was collected by the most massive transporter, which was then off to Classic Team Lotus. Had to reverse on and a tight fit but Stu the transporter driver gave excellent directions!

My ICON 917K homage will be displayed in the “Pride of the Paddock” so if your attending pop along and give my “10 years of lunacy” a vote for maddest car in the “Pride of the Paddock!

As a 13-year-old who was lucky to have witnessed Pedro (and many of my other hero's) at Brands on wet BOAC 1000kms on April 12th 1970, this was the original catalyst which eventually provoked me to reverse engineer a 917 homage. But I wasn't alone that day, my brother-in-law Paul drove myself and my long-time friend Andy and we were all watched in awe as Pedro disappeared down the road in a ball of spray to win by 5 laps. Even our own Quick Vic couldn't keep up!
Andy and I have remained pals over the last 60 years or so, and back in July last year (some 54 years later) I arranged to take Andy out for a few laps of the Indy circuit to remind us both of that wet and cold but truly "folk law" day at Brands.
I took it fairly easy, because if you listen to the question, I asked him as we enter back into the pits in the second video you will understand why!

I was asked by the Half Scale Car Company if I would like to display my Icon 917K at their Half Scale 917 launch back in July at Kilko Spaces in Petersfield. The launch was being supported by Derek Bell and Richard Attwood, and the Half Scale Car team felt that having my full scale Icon 917K alongside would make for some fabulous photos.

Obviously I said YES, would be an honour to attend and another chance to meet two of my racing hero's. Here is a selection of photos from the launch.
