Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Located in Lancashire, UK, Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary gives animals the second chance they deserve. So where did it all begin? This was all we could afford.

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is one of the largest of its kind in the North West of England. It now boasts a 55 acre site in Edenfield near Ramsbottom, Lancashire and is uniquely positioned to cover a wide geographical area stretching across Lancashire to the Pennines and down in to Greater Manchester. Bleakholt is under constant development so as to be able to provide the very best possible care fo

r over 450 animals currently with us. As with many such charities it gradually evolved. It was started by a very kind lady, Olive Lomas, who saved a lucky donkey named Maudie from slaughter. Her hard work and commitment continued thereby saving many horses. In 1957, the project moved on to Bleakholt Farm in the Pennine foothills above Ramsbottom. In the 60’s and 70’s our cats and dogs were housed in leaky wooden buildings. Our horses had old railway carriages for shelter. The site and work of the Sanctuary has steadily expanded and improved since then. Additions included a block of heated catteries and heated kennels. We now have purpose built stables and 1999 saw the opening of a cat and kitten building. We now have a dog hospital, where we are able to provide minor treatments and an appropriate environment for those of our dogs who are under the weather. Our Waddington kennel block was re-built in 2005, and 2006 saw the re-building of another block named Keller block. Both of these blocks have all the latest “mod cons” including underfloor heating and sliding hatches. Improvements are needed all the time. We have completed a much needed new toilet block in 2007 and an extra cat building was completed in 2008 allowing all our felines to be housed in one area. In the future we hope to be able to build a new dog kennel block to include new facilities such as a home environment simulation room to aid in training exercises. In 1969 Bleakholt became a registered charity. Our first president was Margaret, Duchess of Argyll. Our latest president, appointed in 2003, is Ted Robbins who you will know from TV (including “Phoenix Nights”) and radio. Currently he has a programme on Radio Lancashire. He has been a visitor to Bleakholt with his family on a number of occasions in the past so we were pleased he accepted our invitation to be our president. He regularly promotes the good work of the Sanctuary, for which we are very grateful, as well as joining us on Open Days when his busy schedule allows. Thanks Ted! In January 2006, acting upon the advice of the Charities Commission, Bleakholt changed its status to a limited company. The overall planning and management of Bleakholt falls to our Board of Directors (Trustees) who hold monthly meetings. These Directors are members elected at our Annual General Meeting. The day to day tasks of running the Sanctuary and caring for our charges is carried out by our dedicated staff. They are backed up by our army of supporters and volunteers who provide their time and help in so many ways and without whom the Sanctuary could not continue. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work they do. It is very rewarding. Please help us in providing this worthwhile service. Bleakholt hopes this site will give you an insight in to the Sanctuary and its aims. We also hope it introduces you to a few new friends both of the two-legged and four-legged variety.

🐰10 month old baby Halo is a stunner. Not only that, but she is placid, relaxed and people friendly, we’ve not had any behavioural issues and she is clean in her living area. Sounds perfect doesn’t it?😍

Halo previously lived as a house bunny, but she would be fine living either inside or out with the correct set up and would be fine with adults and children.

We would like to re-home her as a partner for another lone rabbit, ideally a neutered male, and adopters will need a temporary separate area for her while bonding with an existing rabbit.🐇

Let’s get this little girl a loving new start and if you would like to meet her, pop up during visiting times, or email: [email protected]

We have been trying to find Buddy his forever home for over a year…

✅ As well as being a handsome chappie, Buddy has a lot of good points:

He walks well on a lead and harness
He is only a young boy at two-years-old so is willing to learn
He is active so would suit a home where his humans like to go out and about on adventures
He is comfy around most dogs

❗So there are a few other things a prospective owner needs to be aware of:

As he is only young, he can get excited, he has plenty of energy and he is a big strong lad
He needs to be given time, patience and understanding and doesn’t like to be left alone for long
He did get rehomed but unfortunately showed behavioural issues towards the male owner. This will be discussed fully with any potential adopters so they have the full picture of Buddy.

So we know Buddy needs a special owner who is a confident and capable handler, is patient, can manage any behavioural issues and can work with Buddy.

Hopefully there is someone out there for this boy. Please do come up and talk to our dog staff if you do think you can be Buddy’s special someone.

Ace just needs a chance – can you give him one?

Ace is a friendly boy who enjoys his walks and, to cut a long story short, just wants a home where he can feel safe, secure and loved.

He is two-years-old so he is a youngster.

He came to us originally as a stray, was rehomed but was returned as he is reactive to other dogs.

He does react to other dogs initially but does generally settle down as long as there isn’t too much going on around him.

For this reason, we feel he would suit a quieter area.

He really is a lovely dog and he does just need someone to take a chance on him.

Please share away for Ace.

If you are interested in Ace, pop up when we are open and talk to our dog staff or fill in the application form.

😍 Jess wants a family who will love her as much as she will love them.

Jess has a lot of love to give and is sitting here, ready and waiting to share her love with her new humans (Jess can be adopted with children over 8).

We don’t know a lot about Jess.

We believe she is a German Shepherd cross Collie and is around three-years-old.

Jess enjoys her walks and is good while she is out. She likes a good sniff and to say ‘Hello’ to passing humans.

She isn’t so keen on passing dogs so will need a quiet area.

She is a strong dog. She doesn’t constantly pull on a walk but will need someone who can control her.

Jess knows basic commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ and will gently take a treat from you.

She is such a sweet girl that just needs a second chance.

If you can provide this, please talk to our dog staff or fill out the application form.

Guinevere is not currently ruling a medieval kingdom

In reality, she’s a fluffy rabbit whose main achievements include being extremely friendly, keeping her room tidy, and looking like she’s one strong gust of wind away from becoming a tumbleweed

Seriously. Look at the hair

Some rabbits have fur, but our royal sweetie here Guinevere has a full time hairstyle

She’s six years old, which in rabbit rescue terms means some people scroll past her in favour of younger rabbits. Which is a shame, because Guinevere seems completely unaware she’s supposed to be slowing down

She’s active, confident, sociable, and spends her days hopping around with the energy of someone who’s just had three espressos and a motivational speech

She previously lived as a house rabbit, but she’d be equally happy indoors or outdoors with the right setup. She’s clean, easy going, and has generally caused us absolutely no trouble whatsoever (feels suspiciously well adjusted for a rabbit)

The only thing she asks in return is occasional grooming as maintaining this level of fabulousness does not happen by accident

We’re hoping to find Guinevere a lovely neutered male rabbit of a similar age, because no queen should be left without her king (or at the very least, a slightly confused gentleman rabbit who appreciates good hair)

Well… that was quick 🥹💙

Just a few days ago, we introduced you to Twitch the elderly little stray who had found herself at Bleakholt and was looking for a very special end of life home

The response we had was incredible

So many of you shared her post, sent kind messages, and wished her well. And yesterday, Twitch headed off to her new foster home!

We’ve already received an update from her new home saying: “Twitch is settling in very quickly. She has used the cat litter, had her tea and jumped up on the sideboard but not confident on how to get down yet!”

And that sums Twitch up perfectly

One minute she’s arrived in a brand new home, the next she’s scaling furniture and making herself comfortable

Seeing her curled up somewhere cosy, with a family of her own and all the love she deserves, is exactly what we hoped for when we shared her story

Thank you to every single person who liked, shared, commented, sent hugs and kisses, or simply kept their fingers crossed for her. It genuinely helped us reach the people who could give Twitch the home she needed

Now if someone could just help her get down from the sideboard…

Pixie is 15 years old, and before you scroll past because you’ve seen the number 15 and immediately pictured a cat knitting a cardigan and complaining about modern music… stop right there

Because Pixie has apparently not received the memo. This precious lady is running on the confidence levels of somebody a tenth of her age

Since moving into one of our outdoor pens, she has discovered that staff members have ears and has been putting them to good use ever since. She chats. She chirps. She demands cheek scratches

She dribbles when she’s happy (that’s an understatement really she could end world thirst issues with how much comes out)

She sunbathes whenever the British weather allows its annual 14 minutes of sunshine

Despite being 15, our girl is THRIVING

Pixie arrived with her friend Fergie after their owners moved to Sweden, and she has spent her entire time here proving that age is largely a suggestion. Since then, Fergie has been rehomed and Pixie’s left without a lap to slobber on

She’s lived with children. She likes people. She may even be happy living with a calm, cat-l friendly dog again. In other words, she’s got a better social life than most of us reading this

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for someone to explain why this lovely little lady hasn’t had more interest

Perhaps people see “15 years old” and think they’re getting a quiet retirement cat

What they’re actually getting is a tiny, dribbling socialite who wants to tell them about her day

🤩 Let’s talk about Alba.

So Alba has been with us 430 days 😢

Our staff love her but this girl needs her own home. We don’t want her to chalk up 500 days here at the Sanctuary and she deserves a special home.

Let’s start with the basics.

Alba is a 4yr old Dogue de Bordeaux-cross-staffie who came to us as her owner couldn’t give her the exercise she needs due to a change in work circumstances.

This beauty has a myriad of good points:
🐕‍🦺 She walks well on a lead and harness
🚶‍♀️She doesn’t mind a leisurely stroll at a slow pace (you don’t rush Alba)
😂 She is lively and funny and will make you laugh A LOT!
🥰 Alba is extremely loyal once she has bonded with you.

A few things to beware of:
⏳ Alba will take a bit of time to get used to you but you will soon win her over
💪 She is a strong girl so she needs a person (s) who can handle strong dogs (especially when the zoomies take over)
😍 She does suffer from separation anxiety so needs someone who doesn’t leave her for long periods.

If Alba is winning you over, please talk to our dog staff about this girl when we are open or fill out the application form below.

Let’s do this for Alba!!
