❓ "Why is my dog always knotty, even though I brush them?"
Have you ever asked this? You're not alone!
The reality is that it's totally normal for dogs to get knots and matts in some high friction areas - behind the ears, in the armpits, in the pawpads, and around the sanitary areas are SUPER common locations.
If you're finding your dog gets knotty in other areas, though, it could either mean that your brush/brushing technique is not quite right for their specific coat type, or that they are overdue a visit to the salon for a trim 💕
❓ "How do I know if I'm brushing correctly?"
❓ "What brush is right for my dog?"
If your dog has a long coat, they probably need what's called a Slicker brush (which has metal pins, and comes in different firmness ratings) as well as a good metal comb, sometimes known as a "greyhound" comb. A really common mistake is to have one and not the other, when really, these tools are like the best of friends - never to be separated 😉 Your brush is what splits the hair apart, separating knots and preventing matting from forming, and your comb is for checking over your work, seeking out those little sneaky knots that hide from the brush first time around. It's really important to brush and comb all the way to your dog's skin, and a metal comb is invaluable to help with this!
It is also really useful to have some sort of coat conditioning spray for brushing, but use this sparingly - a little mist is enough!
❗️ There are some fantastic tutorials for brushing online, when you know what to look for, too! If you look up the phrase "line brushing" you will find plenty of wisdom being shared, and even video tutorials 🥰
And remember, I am always happy to give you a little demo in the salon, and show you which products I use to keep those pesky knots at bay 💪
Even my own dog gets knotty sometimes, and I'm a professional! Ultimately, life happens, and dogs are dogs - having fun and having a great time, getting mucky and wet and playing games. We can get them bathed and fully brushed out in the salon as regularly as they need to in order to keep that beautiful coat. Or we can look at taking some repeat problems areas a little shorter, so it's easier to maintain. There really are lots of options!
And please, never feel guilty if your dog has some knots. It might take a few appointments to figure out what works, but that's okay! We can solve these problems together, and look at the right maintenance schedule for you 😊
