This gorgeous girl is Tilly who was a rescue and has recently moved into her lovely new home π She came to me last week for a groom and left feeling 10x lighter and much more comfortable!
Her mum kindly gave me permission to use her pictures for an educational post on matting so here are the top tips to know...
How to prevent matting -
β‘ Regular at home brushing and combing with the right tools suited to your dogs coat type. If you're not sure what to use or how to use it I'm more than happy to help π
β‘ Use the 'line brushing' method.
β‘ Book 4 - 8 weekly grooming schedules depending on the breed.
Reasons to avoid matting -
β‘ Causes skin irritation, skin infections etc.
β‘ Hides parasites/wounds.
β‘ Restricts movement due to pain & discomfort.
β‘ Restricts blood circulation sometimes leading to haematomas.
What to do if your dog has matting -
β‘ Dont try to brush it out - it will be painful for your dog and will lead them to dislike being brushed in the future. (Only small knots should be gently brushed out.)
β‘ Book them in for a professional grooming appointment. If they have to be taken short it will always be in the best interests of the dog, hair grows back & your dog will be much happier without those matts. π
