I worked with an owner recently who felt completely stuck.

Their HPR cross could walk past distractions in quiet places…

but the moment something deliberately tempting appeared, everything fell apart.

“It feels like they’re choosing not to listen,” the owner said.

But that isn’t what was happening.

HPR breeds are bred to hunt, point and retrieve.

They’re designed to become intensely focused on their environment.

That intensity isn’t a flaw.

It isn’t stubbornness.

It’s instinct and genetics doing exactly what they were meant to do.

In that moment, this dog wasn’t being difficult.

They were overwhelmed and trying to manage powerful instinct with very little support in place.

When the owner understood that, the frustration softened into clarity.

Your dog isn’t stubborn… they’re instinct led and under pressure. 🤍

If that changes how you see your dog, it’s worth sitting with. 🙂

Your gundog’s environment isn’t just fields and wildlife… it’s you… your energy when the lead goes on… your nervous system when things feel unpredictable… your expectations, your pace, your emotional state.

Dogs don’t experience the world in neat compartments. They read everything we bring with us, especially when they’re sensitive, high drive, or already a little overloaded.

So when recall falls apart “out of nowhere”, or your gundog feels wired, frantic, or unable to listen… it’s rarely stubbornness. It’s feedback.

This is why more cues, more control, or more pressure often makes things worse, not better.

Inside my 1-1 work, we slow it right down. 🙂

We look beneath behaviour… at regulation, relationship, instinct, and emotional safety. We build clarity and calm in both ends of the lead, so your gundog can make better choices without being micromanaged.

If you’re feeling stuck, tired, or like you’ve tried everything and nothing quite sticks… you’re not failing. You’re ready for a different approach.

I’m now booking 1-1 support for February and March.

Training done with your gundog, not to them. 🤍

If your gundog could speak… what would they thank you for this month? 🤍

The quieter walks?
The patience you found on the hard days?
Choosing understanding over frustration?

And if you’re stuck for an answer… that’s okay too. Awareness is where everything begins.

Better recall starts with relationship.

Less pressure… more connection. Who’s with me. 🫶

22/01/2026

At home, the world is predictable… low pressure… low distraction.

Outside, everything changes. 🙃

New scents, movement, wildlife, space, anticipation… a gundog’s nervous system can tip into overdrive long before you ask for anything.

When arousal rises, listening drops. Not because they’re being wilful… but because they’re overwhelmed, you see.

This is why repeating cues louder rarely helps… and why recall doesn’t fall apart because your dog “knows better”.

The work isn’t about controlling the environment.

It’s about building enough steadiness – in both of you – so your gundog can choose to come back even when the world is loud.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone 🤍🐾

Know someone who says “They’re perfect at home but not on walks”?

Share this with them… it might change how they see their dog. 🙂

Pressure… might look like it works in the moment.

But what it actually creates is compliance without understanding. When a gundog is pushed, rushed, or corrected into behaviours they’re not ready for, their nervous system doesn’t learn… it copes.

And coping isn’t the same as choosing, am I right? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t want gundogs who perform because they’re shut down or afraid of getting it wrong… I want dogs who can think, respond, and come back because they feel safe enough to do so.

This is why my work centres nervous systems, instincts, and the relationship on both ends of the lead.

Calm builds clarity.. safety builds choice… connection builds reliability.

And that’s where real, lasting progress comes from 🤍

What have you noticed changes when things feel calmer for you on walks?

19/01/2026

So often, when things feel messy with our gundogs, we rush to do something… another cue… another attempt to ‘fix’ it.

But clarity doesn’t come from urgency. Sometimes the most supportive thing you can offer your gundog… and yourself… is a pause.

A breath. A moment to notice what’s really going on. A chance to reset your own energy before asking anything of them.

The thing is, when you change how you show up, everything else can soften. 🙂

This is part of balancing both ends of the lead, something I fully invest in.

IF you are nodding along to this caption, i want you to know… you don’t have to rush this part… I’m here when you’re ready. 🫶

Clarity changes everything. If you’re not sure what you’re asking of your gundog, they can’t be sure either 🤍

Loose lead walking… what does that actually mean to you?

Recall… where do you want them to land, and how quickly?

Listening… in what moments, and to what level?

So often the frustration isn’t a lack of training… it’s a lack of clarity.

Today, just pause and ask yourself:

Am I being clear in what I’m expecting?

When clarity comes first, confidence and calm can follow!

Let me know if you agree in the comments. 🙂

I’m not the dog trainer for you if…

You’re looking for quick fixes, control based training, or someone to “make your gundog behave”.

I don’t work on dogs. I work with them. I look beneath behaviour.

I care about how your gundog feels, not just what they do. 🤍

I’ll ask about your energy, your expectations, and the environment you’re creating… because all of that matters.

So, if you want a deeper relationship with your gundog…

If you’re open to slowing down to move forward…

If you believe your dog doesn’t need fixing, just understanding…

Then we might be a very good fit 🤍

This is training done with your dog, not to them. Connection over control. Always.

So many gundog guardians come to me convinced their dog needs more training. Often, what’s actually needed is support for you… how you’re showing up, how you’re regulating yourself, and how you’re guiding the partnership.

This is the work I do.

I help thoughtful gundog guardians create steadiness, clarity, and connection… so recall becomes a choice, not a battle.

If you’re ready to work with your gundog, not against them, work with me. 🙂

I recently had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with Tug-E-Nuff on a blog all about gundog training… and why it’s so much more than just training for gundogs.

This is work I’m deeply passionate about. 🙂

Because gundog training, when done well, isn’t about pressure, control, or drilling behaviours. It’s about connection. Clarity. Communication. And yes… the power of play.

Tug-E-Nuff are a brand I genuinely love and trust… not just for their toys (which I use every single week), but for their ethics, their understanding of dogs.

In the blog, we explore 👇

– what gundog training actually is

– why it benefits all dogs, not just working breeds

– how play builds focus, confidence and recall reliability

– and why working with your dog changes everything

This is training done with your dog, not to them. It’s about partnership, not perfection. 🫶

If you’ve ever felt stuck, frustrated, or like your dog “knows better but doesn’t do it”… this one’s for you.

You can read the full blog - link is in my comments! 🤍

And huge thanks to Tug-E-Nuff for such a lovely, values-aligned collaboration. More of this, please. 🤍
