I worked with an owner recently who felt completely stuck.
Their HPR cross could walk past distractions in quiet places…
but the moment something deliberately tempting appeared, everything fell apart.
“It feels like they’re choosing not to listen,” the owner said.
But that isn’t what was happening.
HPR breeds are bred to hunt, point and retrieve.
They’re designed to become intensely focused on their environment.
That intensity isn’t a flaw.
It isn’t stubbornness.
It’s instinct and genetics doing exactly what they were meant to do.
In that moment, this dog wasn’t being difficult.
They were overwhelmed and trying to manage powerful instinct with very little support in place.
When the owner understood that, the frustration softened into clarity.
Your dog isn’t stubborn… they’re instinct led and under pressure. 🤍
If that changes how you see your dog, it’s worth sitting with. 🙂
