Hosted by Graham Morton at Simpsons Farm, the latest RRDDG evening meeting was a huge success. With over 150 in attendance, we were treated to a guided farm walk where we got an insight into recent developments and interventions on the unit.
๐Ÿ„ The new bespoke calf rearing shed proved to be of much interest, comprising of a well thought out internal layout including automated calf feeding station, temperature controlled heated calf igloos and pivoted feed bunkers. Away from the young stock we learnt of the changes that have been made to increase efficiency particularly in relation to feeding the herd and time budgeting.

๐Ÿ“Š In addition, visitors attended workstations run by Oakhill Farm Vets Michael Murphy and Charlie Parker

๐Ÿ„ Michael led a discussion on revising AI techniques and avoiding common pitfalls, while Charlie presented his DBR project. This demonstrated the importance of colostrum management on passive transfer of antibodies, and how this effects the growth rate of pre-weaned calves and the fertility of maiden heifers.

๐Ÿบ The evening finished with a very tasty hogg roast, some delightful homemade desserts and a few drinks and some excellent chat.

Thank you to everyone who joined us earlier this week with AHDB Dairy at Moss House Farm.
A few highlights of the day:
๐Ÿ”น Sara Pedersen outlined the 4 success factors behind the Healthy Feet Program and how we can use these to reduce lameness levels on farm
๐Ÿ”น Best practise for treating lame cows was a hot topic and we covered areas such as early detection & treatment, use of blocks & anti-inflammatories and trimming of heifers before calving
๐Ÿ”น This was followed by a farm walk to look at youngstock, dry cows and heifers where the group discussed foot bathing protocols, cubicle design and cow flow
๐Ÿ”นThe final session was a foot trimming demonstration where Sara outlined some of the latest thinking on preventative foot care including using a 'wider model' at the sole ulcer site

The weather was kind and the Holden's were exceptional hosts, allowing us to see their entire farm and explaining how their milk yield increased by 10L/cow/day after installing robotic milkers.
Lely Center Longtown also explained their range of products and services available to farms.
Tracey from Oakhill Farm Vets then went on to explain the outcomes from her artificial intelligence camera trial. She placed cameras on four dairy farms: these looked at the time budget of the cows registering their lying, drinking and feeding times. The farms that had increased lying times correlated with increase yields. Ideally, we want our dairy cows to be spending 14 hours in their beds- what a life!
