Another AMBER heat health alert for much of the UK this week, so a reminder of what to do if your pet (dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, any animal!) overheats:
1 - WET THEN VET - cool as a matter of urgency, and use whatever water you have easy access to that is cooler than the animal. Do NOT delay to seek the "ideal" temperature, time is of the essence. Cooler water will cool quicker, but in an emergency use what is in easy reach quickly. That said, if you're using a hose pipe check you've run through any hot water (especially if the hose has been in the sun) before using it on the dog. UK tap water is typically the ideal temperature.
2 - Cool the car too!
3 - Call your vet ASAP for advice/let them know you're on your way.
Lots of information is floating around on ‘safe temperatures’ for different sizes of dogs-the reality is, there isn’t a safe temperature! Walk early, walk in the shade, keep them cool, know your dog!
