Southsea once had its very own high-tech communication tower… back in the early 1800s!

Before phones, emails and WhatsApp the fastest way to send messages across the country was by semaphore towers. One of these stood right here at Lumps Fort, where Southsea Model Village is today.

Semaphore towers worked a bit like giant mechanical arms. Operators would raise and lower the arms into different positions to represent letters, words, or numbers. From the top of our hill, they could signal across the Solent to other towers in the chain. Each tower could see the next one in the distance, passing the message along like a giant visual relay race.

Messages about naval movements, warnings, and government updates could travel from Portsmouth all the way to London in just a few minutes—a mind-blowing speed at the time, when horse and carriage could take days!

Though the semaphore tower at Lumps Fort is long gone, its story is a fascinating reminder that our site has always been about innovation, communication, and keeping watch over the sea.

Next time you’re here, stand at the high point of the fort and imagine those semaphore arms swinging back and forth, connecting Southsea to the whole country.

💙 Thank You Dean & Amy 💙

Today is a very emotional day for us at the Model Village, as we say goodbye to Dean and Amy Wilson on their last day as joint owners.

For the past 10 years, we’ve shared the journey together — side by side as a family, working through the highs and the lows, and pouring our hearts into this little village. Those years have been full of laughter, challenges, late nights, early mornings, and memories that we’ll carry with us forever.

Dean and Amy, we can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done to bring the village to where it is today. Your hard work, creativity, and love for the place shine through in every corner. Without you, it simply wouldn’t be what it is now.

As this chapter closes, a new one begins with Emma and Mark Wilson taking the reins. We’ve got big plans ahead — new scenes, exciting events, and lots more memories to make — but today we just want to pause and say how grateful we are for the last decade spent building this together.

Here’s to 10 wonderful years, and to Dean and Amy — you’ll always be part of the heart of Southsea Model Village. 💙
