Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell. Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

Here are some top tips on how to help your dog stay cool during a heatwave.

🌾 Why checking for grass seeds matters – more than you might think!

We recently treated a dog who was struggling to pass urine and had blood in his urine. After an ultrasound scan, we were shocked to discover the cause – a foxtail grass seed embedded in his bladder wall.

Grass seeds can work their way into the body through the skin, ears, eyes, paws… and in this unusual case, they had travelled internally. Left untreated, they can cause serious infections and damage.

This seed was successfully removed via surgery, and we’re pleased to say our patient has made a great recovery.

The images show the grass seed seen in the bladder during the ultrasound scan and the offending seed after it had been removed.

✅ Our advice: After walks, especially in long grass, check your pet carefully – between toes, around ears, under armpits, and anywhere seeds could hide. If you notice any swelling, licking, limping, or changes in urination, get them checked promptly.

🛡️Preventing ticks is always better than treating a tick-related illness.

Thankfully, there are lots of effective tick prevention options available, including spot-on treatments, sprays, and long-lasting collars. These
can be used alongside or sometimes instead of your pet’s usual parasite control, depending on the product.

Some treatments repel ticks, while others kill them after they attach. Either way, reducing the time ticks spend on your pet lowers the risk of
disease. Even with protection, it’s still a good idea to check your pet for ticks after walks, especially in areas where ticks are more common. If you find one, it’s best to remove it promptly.

❓Not sure which product is right for your pet? Our vets and nurses are always happy to help you choose the most suitable option.

✅ Tick prevention is fully covered as part of The Healthy Pet Club membership.

🚨 Warning, if you’re squeamish, look away now!
Meet Daisy, a gorgeous Doberman, who found herself in bit of bother this week after a nice walk!
Under sedation, alongside local anaesthetic we discovered a pesky grass seed lodged in her third eyelid— a painful but surprisingly common problem at this time of year!
She is now back in tip top shape, look how delicious she is snuggled up at home 😍

Those grass seeds are small, sharp, and sneaky, often working their way into eyes, ears, paws, and even skin. If your pet suddenly starts squinting, shaking their head, or licking a particular spot repeatedly, it’s worth getting them checked.
Stay safe this summer – and keep an eye out for those seeds! 🌾🐾
