💤 Why downtime after massage matters!

After a massage treatment your dog’s body is still working, processing and digesting. Massage doesn’t stop when the treatment session ends.

The nervous system continues to process the input, tissues adapt, circulation changes and the body begins integrating new patterns of movement and comfort. This decompression period is where most of the benefit actually happens! 🧠

A helpful way to think about this is how we feel after hands-on treatment ourselves. For example, after a deep massage many people feel calm, heavy, a little spaced out or tired. We often want to rest, move gently and avoid jumping straight back into intense activity. Dogs experience very similar responses they just can’t tell us in words but it’s very important we take this on board.

Post treatment it is very common for dogs to rest more, sleep deeply, move a little differently or seem quieter than normal. Some may even appear distant. These responses are often signs that the nervous system is processing and the body is digesting the work that has been done.

Allowing downtime after treatment supports this process and is really important. A calm journey home, gentle activity for the rest of the day and avoiding training or high-arousal exercise gives the body space to settle and stabilise the changes created during the session. Massage creates change. Downtime allows that change to be learnt rather than being overridden 🌿

Every dog is unique, their treatment tailored so if you’re ever unsure what’s appropriate for your dog after a treatment, please ask.

✨ A Little Life Update ✨

Some of you may have noticed things have been a little quieter around here, and I wanted to finally share why.

Over the past year and a half, life has shifted a lot for me. My priorities have changed a lot in a way I wasn’t expecting, and I realised I needed to take a step back and look at where I was heading. I’ve decided to take on a brand-new venture and begin a new career path. It’s something I kept low-key for a while (didn’t want to jinx anything🙈), but now I feel ready to share.

This decision hasn’t been easy, but it’s the right one. It means I can spend more time closer to the people (and dogs 🐾) that mean the most to me. And after watching my mum go through some very difficult times recently, I was reminded how short life really is — too short not to take risks, try new things, and even do the things you once thought you couldn’t and were too scared to try.

So here I am, embracing change, stepping into something new, and feeling both nervous and excited. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my dog walking & training journey — it’s been such a privilege to be part of your dogs’ lives.

For now I am still running the dog training side of things (I can’t not have dogs in my life obviously 🥰) but (as most of my walking clients already know) I won’t be offering dog walking anymore.

I honestly can’t thank you all enough for the support over these years and hopefully the continued support in the future. I have grown so much since starting this up and i have all my past, current and hopefully still future clients to thank.

Here’s to new beginnings, chasing growth, and always making space for the things that matter most. 💛

Another post today from Sarah The Caring Canine Coach.
All about keeping your dog's nails at an appropriate length:
Could Long Nails Be Affecting Your Dogs Behaviour?

Trimming your dog’s nails can feel like a bit of a chore, and it's easy to put off or forget about them. But keeping nails short is more than just cosmetic, it's crucial for your dog's comfort and health.

Imagine when your toenails get too long and they press against the end of your shoes. It gets painful doesn’t it? Now, think about your dog. When their nails are too long, they press into the ground with each step, potentially causing discomfort and pain, especially on hard surfaces.

But here’s where it can get even more complex. If your dog tends to pull on the lead when they see another dog, and that pulling causes pain in their paws or limbs due to their overgrown nails, they may start to make a negative association if that pain happens when another dog appears.

Over time, your dog might begin to anticipate pain when seeing another dog and respond with barking, lunging, or avoidance behaviours in an attempt to prevent discomfort. That’s how something as simple as long nails can contribute to behaviour. Over time, long nails can also cause your dog to walk differently, potentially leading to more serious issues.

So, take a moment today to check your dog’s nails. If they’re touching the ground when your dog is standing still, it’s likely time for a trim. Just be cautious not to cut into the quick, as this can be painful and cause bleeding. If you're unsure or nervous about trimming them yourself, a vet or professional groomer can help keep them comfortable and well-maintained.

⚠️ ** please check messages in case of having to cancel training sessions/ walks due to the high temperatures this week**

🐕 With walking clients I will try an accommodate as much as possible with shorter walks/ trying to move their walks slightly earlier/ play sessions in replacement or cancellations if necessary.. of course this isn’t ideal but it is essential to keep your dogs safe 🥰

☀️🐶 Heat Stroke in Dogs Is Real — And It Can Be Deadly 🐶☀️
Before you head out for a walk, check the temperature! Heat stroke can happen faster than you think, especially in flat-faced, obese, or older dogs.
