🐾 A paws-itively valuable morning! 🐾

Spent the morning at the Hobby Hub learning dog first aid — covering CPR, wounds, choking, and fractures.

This kind of knowledge is so important not just for dog walkers and sitters like me, but for every dog owner. Knowing what to do in an emergency could make all the difference when the unexpected happens.

Feeling really grateful to have learned these lifesaving skills today. 🐶❤️

5 years of Portishead Toad Patrol for us but I think that’s it now for Lucy. Disappointingly the numbers have plummeted over the years around our nature reserve and ponds. I hope they have found new places to inhabit but I think that’s not the case. 😢 🐸

Meeting new dogs is always special — and sometimes it’s extra meaningful when they need a little more understanding 🥰

I’ve recently started walking two gorgeous new dogs. One is deaf, the other is protective and a little anxious, and it’s been an absolute pleasure getting to know them at their pace. When dogs can be reactive or unsure, how we introduce ourselves makes all the difference.

Here’s how I approach meeting new dogs, especially those who need things taken slowly:

🐾 Let them set the pace
No rushing in, no overwhelming attention. I allow them to observe me first and choose when to engage.

🐾 Calm, neutral energy
Soft voice (or gentle body language for deaf dogs), relaxed posture, no direct looming eye contact. I want them to feel safe, not pressured.

🐾 Side-on introductions
Standing slightly turned rather than head-on feels less confrontational and more inviting.

🐾 Respect their space
If they step back, I give them space. Trust is built by showing I listen to their signals.

🐾 Consistency builds confidence
Same tone, same movements, predictable routines. Especially for anxious or deaf dogs, routine creates security.

🐾 Positive associations
Rewarding calm behaviour and making every interaction feel safe and rewarding.

Every dog is an individual. Some need five minutes, some need five weeks — and that’s absolutely okay. I will always adapt, take things slowly, and do what’s right for the dog in front of me.

Building trust isn’t rushed. It’s earned. And it’s one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. ❤️

We had a scary week with our bunny Angel as we found that she did not want her food, her ears were very cold and she was acting out of character and hiding.

We took her to the vets immediately and she was was then taken to the emergency vets for additional treatment. We were very lucky and she rallied with treatment. Please always trust your instincts!!

🐰 Gut Stasis in Rabbits – Know the Signs, Act Fast 🚨

Gut stasis (also called GI stasis) is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits. It can develop quickly and needs urgent treatment.

💛 What to look out for:
• Not eating (even favourite treats)
• Smaller, misshapen or no droppings
• Sitting hunched or pressing tummy to the floor
• Grinding teeth (a sign of pain)
• Lethargy / not moving much
• Bloated or hard tummy
• Hiding more than usual

⏰ When to get help
If your rabbit:
• Hasn’t eaten for several hours
• Hasn’t produced droppings
• Seems in pain
• Feels cold

➡️ Contact a rabbit-savvy vet immediately.
Don’t “wait and see.” Gut stasis can become critical very quickly.

🌿 Prevention tips:
• Unlimited hay (the most important thing!)
• Fresh water always available
• High fibre diet
• Regular grooming (especially long-haired breeds)
• Daily checks on appetite and poo output

Early treatment saves lives.

Trust your instincts — you know your bunny best. 💕

Paw Sit Pals - Stanley & Maisy

Quirky facts about British Blues:
🐱 They mature slowly and can take up to 3–5 years to fully develop their big, stocky build.
🐱 They’re known for being quiet — not big chatterboxes!
🐱 Their dense coat feels like velvet and was originally developed to cope with the British climate.
🐱 They’re one of the oldest recognised cat breeds in the UK.

💭 Health-wise: British Shorthairs are generally sturdy cats, but like many pedigree breeds they can be prone to certain inherited conditions. Back leg problems aren’t considered a common “breed trait,” but issues such as joint problems or heart-related conditions can occur in some lines. If a British Blue is having weakness in the back legs (sadly this is something Maisy suffers with) it’s always best to get a vet check to rule out joint, nerve, or heart concerns.

My Paw Sit Pal this week is Arthur Dog.

Today I had the absolute pleasure of walking a very special new client 🐾

He is blind — and honestly, he is one of the most clever, capable, and determined dogs I’ve met. Watching how he confidently manoeuvres around obstacles, uses his other senses, and learns his surroundings is truly amazing. Dogs are far more adaptable and resilient than we often realise 💛

When walking a blind dog, I always adapt my approach to make sure they feel safe, secure, and confident. This includes:
• Keeping to consistent routes so they can build familiarity
• Using gentle voice guidance and reassurance
• Allowing extra time so they can explore at their own pace
• Avoiding sudden changes, hazards, or busy unpredictable areas
• Building trust so they feel relaxed and supported

Every dog is different, and I’m committed to tailoring my walks to suit dogs with additional needs, whether that’s blindness, anxiety, age-related changes, or medical conditions.

It’s a privilege to support dogs like him and help them enjoy their walks just like any other dog — safely, calmly, and happily 🐶

If your dog has additional needs and you’d like a caring, patient, and understanding walker, feel free to message me.
