As the weather warms, wild hedgehogs begin to emerge from hibernation. This is a critical time for them — they’ve lost a lot of weight over winter and need to rebuild their strength.
If you’re lucky enough to spot one, here’s how you can help them out:
• Leave out shallow dishes of fresh water
• Provide meaty hedgehog or cat food (avoid milk and bread)
• Check gardens carefully before mowing or strimming
• Keep a small gap in fences so hedgehogs can roam freely
• Create natural shelter with log piles or undisturbed corners
You may notice them moving slowly or appearing during the day — this can be normal just after hibernation, but if a hedgehog seems injured or very weak, it may need a little extra help.
