Why do instincts matter in dog training?

Every dog is born with a set of natural instincts - whether it’s herding, chasing, searching, retrieving, guarding, or scenting. These drives aren’t a sign of “bad behaviour” - they’re part of what makes your dog who they are.

When we try to suppress or ignore these instincts, dogs often find their own ways to express them - like chasing cars, barking at wildlife, or pulling on the lead. But when we give them safe, structured outlets to use their instincts, something incredible happens: they relax.

A dog who feels understood and fulfilled will be calmer, more confident, and more connected to you.

Remember: Instincts aren’t the enemy. They’re the key to harmony.

With over 25 years of hands-on experience training dogs (and even horses!), Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her work. She specialises in helping owners understand their dogs’ natural instincts and channel that energy into positive, rewarding activities.

I'm super excited to be presenting this webinar to my dog training peers this week, where I'll be talking all about the kids' dog training classes I run 🥳🐶

These classes are so important because they teach kids how to build a respectful, positive relationship with their dog - laying the foundation for safety, empathy, and lifelong bonds. It's not just about training the dogs, it's about empowering the kids too ❤

Awesome day at Dogstival today. It's the first time I've taken these two to such a big event together and they did brilliantly at managing their big emotions, especially with hundreds of other dogs around 🐶🥰

It was really lovely to see so many of my clients and their four-legged teammates at the show, and it was great to catch up with some other familiar faces from the dog training world too 😊

The dogs have already taken themselves to bed and I'll be having a much-needed early night too 😴
