It is time for a reminder about not leaving pets in cars ..
The Farenheit might not register for us Brits ..
Just to be clear .. PART way through, 113 is 45 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!

Please be vigilent when driving with your dog in the boot ...
Dogs have died on car journeys for the same reason - so please check the temperatures and check on your dogs :-)

BE BONFIRE / FIREWORK READY for your dog !

Yup it is that time of year again !!

Bonfire Night and firework night (although it seems to stretch into weeks now for some unfathomable reason) are approaching fast.

If you have adopted a RESCUE DOG this year and have no knowledge of their fireworks experience, PRESUME they have no knowledge of fireworks and treat as you would a puppy.

For all of those with PUPPIES born this year they will not (unless living close to the pier or harbour) have heard fireworks before and the sight, sound and scents of fireworks may cause them some distress.

And there are steps you can take NOW to help prepare them ...

Socialisation with the sounds of firework is an absolute must ...

There are sounds of fireworks available on special socialisation CDs but also on youtube. Play the track QUIETLY - almost inaudible to you and every time a firework sounds goes off, pop a small tasty treat in your dogs mouth IMMEDIATELY (at the same time or less than a second after ) but never before the firework!

You want sound tracks with INDIVIDUAL POPS AND BANGS to start off with .. or maybe 2-3 bangs very close together. I will do another post later on how to work with full ''firework display'' sounds..

Your training looks like this:
bang + treat .... ..... pop+treat .... .... bang + treat ...... whizzzzzzzzzzzzz and treat .....

You are pairing the scary sound with something good that gives your dog a natural feel good emotion. This is called 'conditioning' as you are creating a positive emotional response to something new.

Do short sessions of socialisation every (or every other) day and gradually increase the volume.

START NOW ! ! and get set for success from the start ...

We are on a mission to transform Bournemouth and Poole into a safe space for all dogs (and kids) to play ..

We need to raise funds for RDuk (my little online doggy support group) to hold a stand at Dorset Dog Fest this year, to do this!

Update for Poole and Bournemouth:
further to my meeting with Chas :-) in the council yesterday

re our existing Doogie Field in Canford Heath.
We are attempting to create a conversation with Dexters to create a joint space - at least for temporary reasons.

We also need to create conversations with the schools and nursery and the adjacent industrial estates to work out parking needs ...if anyone has any contacts - pm me.
