Autumn Warning for Dog Owners in Poole
As we move further into autumn, vets and animal welfare charities are warning dog owners about an increased risk of poisoning during this time of year.
If you’re walking your dog around local spots such as Upton Country Park, Poole Park, Baiter, Hamworthy Rec, Whitecliff, or Holes Bay, please be extra vigilant for seasonal hazards including:
Wild mushrooms and fungi
Acorns, conkers, and fallen fruit
Slug pellets and other garden chemicals
Mouldy leaves and compost heaps
These substances can be highly toxic to dogs, and even small amounts can cause serious illness. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, tremors, excessive drooling, confusion, or collapse. If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.
To help prevent accidents:
Keep your dog on a lead in wooded or grassy areas where these hazards may be present
Avoid letting your dog sniff, chew, or eat anything found on the ground during walks
Stay alert and keep an eye on your dog’s behaviour
If you see mushrooms, pellets, or other suspicious substances in public areas, please share photos or reports here in the group. This helps keep everyone informed and our dogs safe.
Make sure you have your vet’s contact details handy in case of emergencies.
