Having a dog who struggles to come back when called is scary, frustrating and can feel embarrassing especially when you’re trying your best, with yummy treats or even steak 🥩... and your dog is still deaf
Often , when there’s no distractions lots of dogs recall can be pretty good, but what I often hear owners struggling with is when their dog
🐕 runs up to other dogs, wants to play & ignores you 🐶
🐕 chases other animals or wildlife s 🐿
🐕 runs & jumps up to other people 😬
I DO understand how this feels. I rescued my dog from Cyprus who had not been out. Once she gained her confidence she wanted to play with everyone & go visit humans too.
I’d helped many clients dogs over the years, and I’d had my own dogs since puppies & never before had a recall issue with my own dog, until I got my Autumn 🍂
As a trainer I felt slightly embarrassed, & as an owner I was worried for her safety. A food reward wasn’t enough, other dogs were much more fun!
I was there, in my clients shoes & I understand how it feels!
So I set about working on a training plan for her, & I’m pleased to say we now have a U turn recall, meaning I can recall her on route to another dog .
There’s one email I had recently that made me feel sad. Our dogs are family, I call mine my hairy daughters.
A huge worry was dogs being stolen and this client wanted to build a perfect recall to keep her safe. It’s sad this is happening, I’ve seen posts on Facebook. As well as training yes we need to be vigilant.
Keep safe all, & if in doubt use a training line while you’re training 💕
