DSR is about recircular ecosystems.
A reeftank is (ideally) a closed ecosystem.
When you decide to work together with this ecosystem you can archieve (near) perfect balance. Which means a recircular ecosystem with only essential import/export, hence minimal maintenance.
How does it works?
Fish are mainly polluters, because they eat and p**p a lot! The waste products eventually breakdown to nutrients and fertilizers, eventually cummulation to harmfull levels if not properly dealt with.
Corals are cleaners, they consume nutrients and fertilizers. Doing so prevent the buildup of nutrients and other harmfull substances in the water. To much corals growth will eventually lead to Nutrient deficiencies.
So.... Both corals and fish are part of the recircular ecosystem. Let them do the majority of the work, so you waste less time on maintenance and less resources on additives and equipment.
In that context a fishtank can never be recircular and will need more equipment to deal with the surplus generated by overstocking and overfeeding. So the first step should be to take the bull by the horns and adress the main issues.
How to archieve balance....
A (near) recircular system starts with balancing the inhabitants: fish vs corals.
Don't just buy fish because they look nice, but because they can be usefull for your system. Later on when you're in control and feel bold you can buy anything you like.
If you're not going for a recircular system there are a few options:
Oversized skimmers , Rollermat filters
Algae refugiums, DeepSandBed filter
Berlin system (with lots of live rock)
Biopellets, GFO, Algae reactors
Nowadays DSR don't use any of these options because, they takeup to much space, are expensive, and require continuous manual maintenance and replacements. So unless you love to invest in equipment and spend time decorating your sump they are NOT a requirement in modern day DSR dosing systems
There are 4 recircular DSR dosing system to consider:
- FullDSR supplements, full control which required you to do correct and make your own dosing solutions
- EZDSR, which is just plug and play system with 4 individual channels deal with.
- EZ2Go, where the dosing channels are reduced to 2 channels. Which make it much easier to work with.
- TotalReefCare, a allinone single channel dosing solution, especial suited for novice reefers who just want an easy way to get started with.
All above dosing system allow the use of minimal equipment, making the entrylevel of thr hobby far more affordable. Tank, powerfilter, streamers, light, doser, dosing solution, sand, seeding material, rocks for coral mounting. Break in the tank using the fullDSR procedure
Fish only solution:
My way solution for a fishonly would be a powerfilter and UV lamp for clarity and itch prevention, supported by EZCarbon dosing.
Saltwater Fishtanks can easily be kept with higher nitrate and phosphate, corals can't handle that.
When the dosing can't keep up you can occasionaly do large waterchanges. Far less than you normal would do.
