DSR is about recircular ecosystems.

A reeftank is (ideally) a closed ecosystem.
When you decide to work together with this ecosystem you can archieve (near) perfect balance. Which means a recircular ecosystem with only essential import/export, hence minimal maintenance.

How does it works?
Fish are mainly polluters, because they eat and p**p a lot! The waste products eventually breakdown to nutrients and fertilizers, eventually cummulation to harmfull levels if not properly dealt with.

Corals are cleaners, they consume nutrients and fertilizers. Doing so prevent the buildup of nutrients and other harmfull substances in the water. To much corals growth will eventually lead to Nutrient deficiencies.

So.... Both corals and fish are part of the recircular ecosystem. Let them do the majority of the work, so you waste less time on maintenance and less resources on additives and equipment.

In that context a fishtank can never be recircular and will need more equipment to deal with the surplus generated by overstocking and overfeeding. So the first step should be to take the bull by the horns and adress the main issues.

How to archieve balance....
A (near) recircular system starts with balancing the inhabitants: fish vs corals.

Don't just buy fish because they look nice, but because they can be usefull for your system. Later on when you're in control and feel bold you can buy anything you like.

If you're not going for a recircular system there are a few options:
Oversized skimmers , Rollermat filters
Algae refugiums, DeepSandBed filter
Berlin system (with lots of live rock)
Biopellets, GFO, Algae reactors
Nowadays DSR don't use any of these options because, they takeup to much space, are expensive, and require continuous manual maintenance and replacements. So unless you love to invest in equipment and spend time decorating your sump they are NOT a requirement in modern day DSR dosing systems

There are 4 recircular DSR dosing system to consider:
- FullDSR supplements, full control which required you to do correct and make your own dosing solutions
- EZDSR, which is just plug and play system with 4 individual channels deal with.
- EZ2Go, where the dosing channels are reduced to 2 channels. Which make it much easier to work with.
- TotalReefCare, a allinone single channel dosing solution, especial suited for novice reefers who just want an easy way to get started with.
All above dosing system allow the use of minimal equipment, making the entrylevel of thr hobby far more affordable. Tank, powerfilter, streamers, light, doser, dosing solution, sand, seeding material, rocks for coral mounting. Break in the tank using the fullDSR procedure

Fish only solution:
My way solution for a fishonly would be a powerfilter and UV lamp for clarity and itch prevention, supported by EZCarbon dosing.
Saltwater Fishtanks can easily be kept with higher nitrate and phosphate, corals can't handle that.
When the dosing can't keep up you can occasionaly do large waterchanges. Far less than you normal would do.

THE OPTIMAL FLOW
It doesn’t matter how many pumps you use ,there will always remain dead angles in the tank, where there will be detritus deposition. Eventually the pumps will work against each other.
The answer is, to use timers to switch them at random intervals.
By applying this technique, many problems related to dirt accumulation are avoided.
Problems can be: Cyano, Algae growth, planaria, high nutrients. it may even cause the aquarium and corals to perform badly. Incorrect flow can eventually lead to a tank crash.

DSR-EZ quick start procedure:
Go through these steps first with high nutrients: https://dsrreefing.com/nutrients/
Install a power filter (siphon as much dirt as possible from the bottom):
Install and calibrate the dosing channels.
Always place the outflow higher than the EZ bottles, to prevent overdosing due to siphoning. Places the outflow above water and uses non-return valves on all channels to prevent back siphoning. (See illustration)
measure KH, Ca, Mg, PO4, NO3 to get an impression of the values and start with the basic doses if necessary
use these tests: https://dsrreefing.com/testkits/
use the DSR reference to calibrate them: https://www.dsrreefing.com/supplements/
- Start the basic dosage for EZCarbon (as stated on bottle)
The following applies: dose if there is a need for it, so do not dose if the value is too high.
- Start the base dose for EZBuffer (as stated on bottle)
- Start the basic dosage for EZCalcium (as stated on bottle)
- Start basic dosage for EZTrace (as stated on bottle = 50% of EZ Calcium)
measure (2) weekly and top up if necessary
optimize the values by adjusting the dosages
if you start with very high PO4/NO3 values, clean the sandy bottom thoroughly by means of siphon off and gradually increase the EZcarbon dosage until nitrate and phosphate go down. A UV lamp can be used preventively against bacterial bloom at a high dose. It is not necessary to start with optimal values, DSR has been developed to pull an aquarium out of the doldrums under poor conditions.

The fullDSR start:

In the DSR start, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate spikes are undesirable. Therefore, we avoid introducing large amounts of live rock. Much of the introduced life will die and a nutrient spike will be inevitable. You will be rewarded with a blooming carpet of green algae.
The preference is to gradually graft the system with small amounts of live stone. It is best to start with used stone that has been running for a while, which does not contain unwanted pests z.a. aptasia, majano, T.aster, algae and crabs.

The advantage of a fullDSR start is that you can adjust the system from the start.

Starting with:
Zero nutrients. You add them yourself when you need them. You thus minimise nutrient peaks and speed up maturation time.

Control lighting to minimise nuisance algae growth (preferably no lighting for the first 2 weeks)

Preventing algae growth:
DSR controls nutrients by adding and removing them with NO3 + / PO4 + versus CarbonVs / Fe +. During start-up, minimising nutrients is essential as adding them at this stage will only feed algae growth.
NO3 and PO4 supplementation is only necessary for corals (with nutrient deficiency symptoms) and only if the algae are under control by means of the cleaning crew (snails / hedgehogs / doctors etc)
Ignore NO3 + and PO4 + supplementation during the start-up phase, or change the target value to 0.00ppm in the calculator
⛔The only time PO4+ is recommended during start-up is to bring down a strong imbalance of NO3 i.c.w. DSRcarbon.
At this stage, lighting should definitely not be done yet.

We use the following sequence:
-Fill tank with saltwater with the poor values. (0.02 phosphate 0.2 nitrate)
- coral sand in the tank 1-3mm
- inoculate with a portion of turned-in sand from a healthy aquarium (5-10%) and a piece of live rock (1kilo on 100l) that you smash to bits with a mallet. Mix this mix well.
- several pieces of live rock of 2-3 kg to every 100 litres
- leave for a few days with alternating currents (without lighting).
- install a power filter
- the skimmer may be installed on the 2-3rd day so as not to skim off all the grafting material at once
- just let it run and after a week measure nh4, no2, no3, po4.
- depending on this it will be decided what to do.
- if the nutrients are within healthy values you can start with minimal lighting with max 6 hours a day. After a week increase by 1-2 hours, watching for emerging flap and other unwanted deposits.

Start dosages:
From start-up onwards, DSR tools are applied to control the system stability.
