Caring for Tortoises 🐢💛
We’ve been looking after this little superstar lately, and it’s the perfect time to talk about tortoise care. Husbandry has come a long way in recent years, but sadly many people are still using old, outdated methods that don’t meet a tortoise’s needs. With the right modern care, these amazing animals can live long, healthy, and happy lives.
Tortoises are incredible, long-lived companions with unique personalities — but they have very specific care needs to keep them happy and healthy.
🌿 Diet
• Leafy greens — kale, dandelion leaves, collard greens, romaine, mustard greens
• Safe flowers — hibiscus, rose petals, nasturtiums
• Occasional extras — grated carrot, bell pepper, cucumber
• Avoid — iceberg lettuce (low nutrition), fruits (only as rare treats), and anything high in protein
• Supplements — add calcium (powder or cuttlebone) several times a week for strong shells, plus a vitamin supplement with vitamin D3 if they don’t get daily sunlight
☀️ Lighting & Heating
Tortoises need UVB lighting or safe outdoor time to produce vitamin D3, which helps absorb calcium.
They also need heat to regulate their body temperature — a basking area should be around 32–35°C (90–95°F) with a cooler zone between 22–26°C (72–78°F) so they can move between temperatures as needed. Heat mats are not suitable for tortoises — overhead heat sources mimic natural sunlight best.
🏡 Space
Provide a secure, spacious outdoor or indoor enclosure where they can explore, dig, and bask. They love hiding spots and natural textures underfoot.
💧 Hydration
Fresh water should always be available, and a shallow soak a couple of times a week can help with hydration and shedding.
🐢 With the right diet, environment, and enrichment, tortoises can thrive for decades — becoming a slow but steady part of your family’s story.
